The Office of Administration Division of Facilities Management, Design and Construction is hiring a Stationary Engineer. If you enjoy working in and around high‑pressure steam plants and have experience in operating, maintaining, and repairing these facilities, this is the job for you.
What You’ll Do
Supervise the operations of a high‑pressure steam heating plant, which may include electrical production or a high‑temperature water heating plant, on an assigned shift.
Monitor instruments, meters, and other controls to ensure that production and voltages are maintained in accordance with instructions.
Monitor a large solar array system to ensure proper temperatures are maintained.
Operate large‑scale refrigeration systems and make small repairs as needed.
Take water samples and perform water‑chemistry tests on boiler water and cooling‑tower water.
Respond to emergency calls at the plant and, if necessary, travel to hospitals or other facilities to assess and address reported issues.
Minimum Qualifications
2‑4 years of skilled experience in the relevant trade area.
Considerable knowledge of the operation and maintenance of high‑pressure steam, high‑temperature hot water, and electrical generation equipment, including generators, electronic controls, meters, pumps, and related equipment.
Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions in the trade.
Ability to operate, maintain, and repair power‑plant and related equipment.
Ability to estimate time and materials required accurately.
Proficiency in prioritizing, multitasking, and providing direction and guidance to staff.
Ability to discern the skill set needed for projects and determine whether they can be completed in‑house or require a contractor.
Working knowledge of boilers, chillers, high‑pressure steam plants, and other mechanical equipment, including BAS and other control systems.
Valid driver’s license from Missouri or an adjacent state if residing outside Missouri.
OSHA 10 and/or 30 preferred; FMDC can provide if needed.
Excellent attendance, work ethic, attention to detail, and critical‑thinking skills.

Additional Expectations
Prioritize excellent customer service for a wide and diverse network of internal and external stakeholders.
Perform accurate work related to the 24/7 operation, maintenance, repair, and oversight of boilers, chillers, high‑pressure steam plants, and other mechanical equipment.
Ensure compliance with administrative tasks, including compiling reports on monthly utility usage, water sampling, testing, monitoring, and adjusting equipment, ordering parts and supplies, and more.
Participate in operational administration, including monitoring inventory, recommending outside contractors, preparing bids, and monitoring work and equipment.
Troubleshoot and repair equipment and machinery, and complete preventive and corrective maintenance tasks as assigned.
Follow Health and Safety protocols and OSHA standards.
Maintain facilities in compliance with agency programmatic requirements.
Answer emergency calls and occasionally travel to other facilities for coverage and assistance.
Respond to urgent texts, phone calls, voicemails, chat messages, and emails after normal shift hours, while acknowledging that this does not constitute on‑call status.
Provide coverage at state facilities after hours and for emergency purposes such as severe weather, snow removal, water leaks, or fire.
Communicate, collaborate, and operate with integrity, inspiring trust and building positive rapport with stakeholders and the public.
Plan, manage, and execute numerous time‑sensitive projects independently or as part of a team.
Comprehend, analyze, and interpret complex technical documentation and manuals to solve problems and provide resolution options.
Maintain a safety‑first mindset with considerable knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
