About MKN MKN is seeking a Senior Electrical & Instrumentation and Controls (I&C) Engineer to support the planning, design, and implementation of electrical and control systems for water and wastewater infrastructure projects. This role is ideal for a seasoned engineer with deep expertise in power distribution and control systems design, PLC/SCADA design/integration, and process instrumentation. You’ll work closely with multidisciplinary teams to deliver technically sound and innovative solutions that serve public agencies and communities throughout California.

Key Responsibilities

Design of electrical power distribution system (i.e. 480VAC and below) and I&C systems design (for water and wastewater treatment facilities, pump stations, and distribution systems). Medium‑voltage design experience is a plus.

Develop electrical design drawings and specifications, including single‑line diagrams, load calculations, panel layouts/schedules, cable/conduit sizing, grounding system design, indoor/outdoor lighting designs, conduit/cable schedules, protective relaying and metering, UPS and power conditioning systems, lightning and surge protection systems, motors and motor controls, and heat tracing design.

Perform power system studies including load flow, short circuit, protective device coordination, arc flash analysis, and harmonic studies, using ETAP or SKM.

Develop and specify I&C systems pertaining to process instrumentation (flow, pressure, level, analytical, etc.) and support control logic development and system integration, and develop P&IDs, I/O list, loop wiring diagrams, telemetry design and communication/network system architecture.

Produce detailed construction contract drawings, specifications, and cost estimates for bid and permit packages.

Coordinate with internal engineering teams, integrators, contractors, clients, and regulatory agencies throughout the project lifecycle.

Mentor junior engineers and contribute to MKN’s technical standards and design practices.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline from an accredited university or college.

California Professional Engineer (PE) license in Electrical Engineering or Control Systems (or ability to obtain within 1 year).

5+ years of relevant experience in electrical and I&C design for municipal water and wastewater infrastructure.

Strong understanding of low‑voltage power systems, motor control, VFDs, MCCs, emergency power systems, and electrical codes and standards (NFPA70-NEC, NFPA 820, NFPA 70E, IEEE).

Proven experience with power distribution, lighting, grounding, and PLC controls systems design.

Proficient in AutoCAD, Revit, and design/analysis software (ETAP, SKM, RSLogix/Studio 5000).

Familiarity with I&C specifications and process instrumentation in water/wastewater environments.

Excellent communication skills, a collaborative spirit, and demonstrated ability to manage schedules and budgets.

Strong attention to detail, organizational and time‑management skills, adaptable, agile, and responsive to quick changes in direction, with strategic thinking and problem‑solving abilities.

Compensation Compensation is based on experience and qualifications. Anticipated salary range: $110,000 – $150,000. MKN offers a competitive benefits package including health insurance, retirement plan, paid time off, and support for licensure, continuing education, and training.
