Departmental Overview The Department of Recreation & Wellbeing provides competitive and recreational opportunities for students, faculty, staff and campus affiliated community members. In addition to the 30 sports clubs, the department offers a wide range of recreational activities and state of the art equipment.

Position Summary Involves instructional or program activities related to recreation, leisure, and fitness in an accredited environment; provides first aid and emergency care as necessary, and responds to user/customer needs. Works for Cal Adventures programs and serves as an instructor. Independently supervises participants in campus recreational programs.

Responsibilities

Provides advanced or specialized activity instruction to program participants, individually or in groups.

Leads specialized activities such as long camping trips that include advanced knowledge of safety and survival techniques required to survive and instruct participants in remote locations and under moderate to occasional severe outdoor conditions.

Maintains a supportive environment for program participants and facilitates involvement.

Interacts with recreational program participants in a positive manner.

May lead other camp counselors and provide guidance and instruction to other program instructors on best practices, procedures, methods and techniques on program and survival activities.

Keeps current on teaching methods, techniques and skills through continuing education and certification.

Participates in required professional development activities.

Keeps current on University required trainings.

Required Qualifications

Has advanced knowledge of program activity.

Position requires work leadership and interpersonal skills for those in a lead capacity, and the ability to work effectively across the organization, internally and externally.

Service orientation, program management, sound judgment and decision-making, critical thinking, develop original ideas, creative problem-solving skills in a varied and challenging environment.

Must be able to work effectively, across all organization levels, internally and externally.

Client service minded, entrepreneurial spirit and creative thinking.

Must have highly effective verbal and written communication skills.

Must be proficient in the use of basic computer applications.

Knowledge of and/or can quickly learn campus policies and procedures.

High School Diploma and/or equivalent experience/training.

Salary & Benefits The budgeted hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $22.22 - $27.00.
