Pay Incentives

Lateral Police Officer Bonus: $20,000

Police Academy Graduate Bonus: $10,000

Referral Bonus: $2,000 for a successful lateral referral

Position Coronado Police Officers perform general police work, including crime presentation, law enforcement, traffic enforcement, and special assignments. Incumbents typically drive a police vehicle but may be assigned to special details as needs arise. Officers may be called upon to maintain order in extreme or emergency conditions.

Ideal Candidate Community‑service oriented individual with excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Must exercise discretion, trust, confidence, sound judgment, and initiative to partner with the community to identify and resolve concerns, maintaining peace, safety, and order.

Minimum Requirements Lateral Entry

Possession of a California Basic P.O.S.T. Certificate and employment as a sworn full‑time Peace Officer in California within two years of offer.

Completion of the P.O.S.T. requalification course if more than two years have passed since employment as a sworn full‑time Peace Officer.

Out‑of‑state lateral applicants must possess a California P.O.S.T. Basic Course Waiver and employment as a sworn full‑time Peace Officer within two years of offer.

Academy Graduates Applicants must be in the final phase of an accredited P.O.S.T. Academy at the time of application and possess an Academy P.O.S.T. Certificate upon employment.

Candidate Selection Process Applicants must submit copies of CA P.O.S.T. certificates, waivers, or academy certificates. Review is based on relevant education, training, and experience. Qualified candidates will submit a Personal History Statement (PHS).

Oral panel interview (pass/fail) requiring 100% on all components.

Polygraph examination and comprehensive background check.

Final interview with the Chief of Police. Conditional offer subject to psychological, medical, and drug‑screen examinations.

Additional Information All new employees must submit E‑Verify and proof of legal right to work in the United States. The City participates in E‑Verify and is an equal opportunity employer. The position is a mandated reporter under California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act.
