Job Overview

The Maintenance Worker is responsible for maintaining all buildings and grounds owned by Dubuque County.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

The following duties are primarily performed and are essential for this position.  Employees are expected to be able to perform each of these job duties satisfactorily and successfully to be qualified for the position.  Other duties may be required and assigned.

Building and Grounds:

Maintains buildings and grounds, cleans, picks up trash.

Custodial:

Performs daily custodial tasks. Monitors/inventory cleaning supplies and maintenance items.

Electrical:

Hangs lights, replaces outlets and switches, new power to equipment.

Plumbing:

Fixes leaks, replaces when bad, installs new fixtures.

Carpentry:

Fixes drywall, paints, remodels, hangs fixtures.

HVAC Boilers Cooling Tower:

General maintenance, troubleshoots, fixes items, changes filters.

Labor:

Repairs desks, moves furniture, hangs shelves and pictures.

Snow Removal:

Cleans sidewalks and steps, applies salt.

Minimum Education Qualifications

Education and/or Experience Requirements:

High school diploma or GED equivalency, and some maintenance experience.

Licenses, Certifications, and Other Requirements:

Valid driverΓÇÖs license.

Criminal History/DHS Registry check required.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Qualifications

In order to perform the functions and responsibilities of the position (listed above) the following knowledge, skills, and abilities are essential.

Working knowledge of:

Heating and cooling systems.

Electrical, plumbing and boiler systems.

Cleaning methods, materials and equipment.

Maintenance equipment.

Ability to:

Repair mechanical devices and instruments.

Work from sketches, drawings and blueprints.

Properly use Lockout/Tagout Equipment and procedures.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.

Perform heavy manual labor.

Read electrical meters.

Diagnose and identify a failed piece of equipment.

Operate small hand tools, read tape measure, skyjack / lift, and snow blower.

Physical Requirements

Vision abilities required by this job including close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Effective verbal speaking and hearing abilities are needed to handle communications with staff, residents, and others.

Requires pushing, pulling, and lifting up to 25 pounds regularly and up to 50 pounds occasionally with assistance.

Requires ability to walk steps, reaching, squatting, stooping, bending, and sitting, pushing, pulling, twisting, gripping and apply physical intervention holds.

Work Environment

Work is primarily indoors. Occasional exposure to outside weather conditions and some outdoor work.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; risk of electrical shock; and vibration.

Some exposure to slippery surfaces when floors are wet.

Exposure to chemicals from cleaning compounds and exposure to bodily fluids require the use of personal protective equipment to safeguard against potential biological and chemical hazards.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but can be loud. PPE is provided and required to be used.
