Job Summary The Director of Application Engineering will lead the application engineering team responsible for positioning Nortek DCC as a trusted technical advisor for the data center cooling market. The Director will own all commercial‑facing technical documentation from submittals to educational material, lead technical discussions with customers, drive equipment selection, ensure quote deadlines and maximize productivity and profitability, and set and execute the technical strategy for each customer.
Key Responsibilities
Planning, directing, and coordinating the tasks and growth for the application engineering team to specify products in compliance with company goals and objectives.
Assign and balance application engineering resources for all quote‑related technical deliverables. Achieve a 100% on‑time delivery record for all RFP activity. Conduct technical presentations and product demonstrations to customers, highlighting the features and benefits of our cooling solutions to drive customer specifications to our solutions.
Partner with customers to configure market‑leading data center cooling systems based on their technical requirements, efficiency requirements and budget.
Provide technical direction to the application engineering team and technical support and guidance to customers during the qualification, design and sales processes, addressing any questions or concerns.
Own internal technical training across the organization for data center equipment applications.
Own the preparation and execution of technical proposals, selections and submittals for customers, ensuring accuracy while minimizing time to delivery.
Work closely with engineering and the product management team for future product development to tailor standard and custom cooling solutions, leading with a customer‑first approach.
Lead the standards and industry trends and developments in data center cooling technology by participating in all relevant governing bodies (i.e., OCP, AHRI, etc.).
Own the technical performance and maintenance of selection software for all equipment.
Build and maintain strong relationships with customers, ensuring customer satisfaction and continued repeat business.
Support technically to achieve sales targets and contribute to the overall growth and success of the company.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
Technical expert with the ability to engage and work closely with VP of Engineering, Design Engineer, Supply Chain and other technical customer stakeholders. Maintain employee safety and morale by creating a safe working and efficient working environment.
Market leader in data center cooling technology, understanding all technical applications and equipment dynamics in the mission‑critical space.
Maintain proper employment levels through selecting, interviewing, and training of personnel.
Is accountable for the creation and execution of solutions that deliver desired results and owns the Performance‑Driven Culture.
Ability to work collaboratively and lead teams in a teamwork culture.
Has bias for action and leads change toward improvement.
Strong leadership skills, including the ability to think strategically, solve problems and create a motivating team environment to provide innovative solutions to customer challenges.
Ability to select and hire “A” players, continuously develop employees, coach to maximize performance and manage underperformers.
Job Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in engineering.
Proven experience in application engineering and commercial processes within the data center cooling industry, HVAC or HVAC‑related field.
Must have leadership, coaching and mentoring experience and skills.
Strong technical knowledge of data center cooling systems and related technologies, including airside equipment, computer room air handlers, coolant distribution units (CDUs) and hydronic design.
Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to effectively convey technical information to both technical and non‑technical audiences.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with strong collaboration and interpersonal skills.
Educated and experienced in plan and specification reviews with ability to understand and read technical details from prints, drawings, and other documents.
Willingness to travel as required to meet with customers and attend industry events.
Must possess strong computer skills in:
Microsoft Office Suite
Microsoft Dynamics (DAX) or similar MRP/ERP system
AutoCAD / 3D Application
HVAC selection software (coils, fans, heat exchangers, pumps, etc.)
7–10 years of experience in Application Engineering or similar role.
Technical knowledge:
Thermodynamics
Fluid dynamics
Applied HVAC equipment design
Hydronics design
Psychometrics
Must have selection tool experience
Preferred
PE
Post‑graduate education
Minimum of 10 years of related experience and a bachelor’s degree.
Knowledge of business and management, HR, and project management principles and practices.
