Summary The Performance Improvement Nurse serves as a consultant for Rush University Medical Center. The Performance Improvement Nurse designs, implements, and monitors patient safety programs that support the organizational goal to reduce patient harm. The Performance Improvement Nurse performs root cause analyses and proactive risk reduction measures when indicated and monitors corrective action plans. The Performance Improvement Nurse establishes strong working relationships with interdisciplinary members of the health care team including the medical staff, nursing and other operational areas, administration, and support services. The position encompasses project management, consultation, facilitation, data abstraction, data analysis, and interpretation. The Performance Improvement Nurse exemplifies the Rush mission, vision, and values and acts in accordance with Rush policies and procedures.
Responsibilities
Performs detailed root cause analysis of adverse events and near misses or other identified improvement initiatives
Uses occurrence data to identify potential system issues and performs common cause analysis
Collaborates with physicians, administrative leaders, and other clinical staff on the development of corrective action plans; provides monitoring, implementation, and data management assistance as needed
Determines strategies to meet educational needs regarding patient safety methods throughout the organization
Provides training and education to all levels of the medical center on RUMC’s Just Culture and Patient Safety methodology
Provides consultation regarding evidence-based practice with emphasis on process reengineering and systemic implementation
Facilitates successful transition of improvement initiatives to sustain project improvements
Interacts with and reports to appropriate governmental and private regulatory and accreditation bodies as well as patient safety organizations as required to meet regulatory and Leapfrog reporting requirements and to promote patient safety practices within the organization
Creates and monitors dashboards related to metrics
Facilitates organizational daily huddles or meetings
Other duties and responsibilities as assigned
Required Job Qualifications
State of Illinois Registered Nurse licensure
Master’s degree in nursing, health system management or equivalent
At least five years of direct patient care experience in a hospital
At least two years of quality improvement experience
Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Ability to perform tasks independently and prioritize workload
Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously
Preferred Job Qualifications
Certified Professional in Patient Safety (CPPS)
