Job Overview The Research Assistant (RA), Department of Family Medicine – Georgetown University, will play a key role in the conduct of a large, multi‑site, randomized controlled trial and directly support the progress of the project. The overarching aim is to understand which treatments are most effective for patients seeking care for acute sinus infections. Main responsibilities center on the recruitment and enrollment of patients into the study, including outreach and providing information about the study, identifying and pre‑screening individuals, obtaining informed consent, collecting questionnaires and data, and following patients for the duration of their participation (approximately 2‑4 weeks). Most activities will occur at primary and urgent care offices in the greater metro area. The RA will assist in the supervision of undergraduate students.
Responsibilities
Recruit, enroll, facilitate informed consent with study participants and area practices expense policies
Frequent travel to local area clinics; comply with GU and funding agency’s cost principles and supervise a team of undergraduate students, particularly while in off‑campus clinics overage (varies from clinic to clinic)
Delegate and oversee student tasks, schedules, and travel/logistics; ensure clinics have adequate
Adhere to the approved study protocol, standard policies and operating procedures, Good Clinical Practice, and other applicable guidelines and regulations
Day‑to‑day activities that support the progress of the study, including but not limited to: report preparation, data collection; quality review, management of interventions and lab supplies; training.
Work Interactions Running a clinical trial is a time‑intensive endeavor as it requires close interactions with patients, practice clinicians and office staff, collaborators, and other university departments. The RA will work closely with the PC to respond to emails, phone calls, and meetings. The RA will stay in frequent contact—especially when off‑campus—and will have access to a GU‑issued cell phone or personal phone (expenses covered by GU). The RA serves as the main study contact at a number of primary and urgent care clinic offices, with diverse patient populations and previous research experience. Strong interprofessional skills and ability to adapt to different clinic workflows and patients are essential.
The RA will report directly to the PC and PI. The RA will frequently interact with other members of the research team, site teams and the data coordinating center (DCC) at MedStar Health Research Institute (MHRI). The RA will attend bi‑weekly team and project meetings, and educational/training on topics in clinical research.
Requirements And Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in a health or science‑related field is required. Consideration will be given for a combination of education and experience.
Previous experience working in a research or clinical setting.
A valid driver’s license and clean driving record is required.
Upon hire, the RA must complete and maintain the required training certifications for research study personnel, including human subjects protection, HIPAA and ICH Good Clinical Practice.
Master’s degree; experience with clinical trials; working knowledge of Excel and REDCap is preferred.
Fluency in Spanish is highly preferred.
