Laboratory Technician The Lundquist Institute for Biomedical Innovation at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center is an independent, non-profit biomedical research organization located in Torrance, California. In dozens of laboratories throughout the campus, researchers work to unravel the mysteries of heart and kidney disease, cardiac complications in newborns, chronic lung disease, skin cancer, sickle cell disease, and disorders of the autoimmune system. Many projects are collaborative, involving experts from different areas of specialization, and the discoveries have prevented blindness in newborns, enabled premature infants with fragile lungs to breathe, and allowed children with rare, fatal diseases to grow up healthy and strong.

Pay Range

Base pay range: $17.87/hr - $21.63/hr (actual pay based on skills and experience).

Requirements

BS from an accredited college or university in Cell/Molecular Biology or Biochemistry.

Up to one (0‑1) year of lab experience in Cell Biology or a related field.

At least six months to one year of experience handling and breeding mice.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

Knowledge of cell and molecular biology.

Ability to maintain a mouse colony and isolate cells and tissues from mice.

Ability to perform immunostaining, immunoblotting, genotyping, and basic cell and molecular biology techniques.

Ability to use software programs including Illustrator, Prism, and Microsoft Office.

Ability to work as a member of a team.

Ability to work well under pressure and meet multiple and sometimes conflicting deadlines.

Ability to interact in an appropriate and professional manner.

Demonstrated cooperative behavior and positive problem‑solving and conflict‑resolution skills.

Available to work dependable, flexible shifts.

Essential Job Functions

Maintains mouse colonies, including animal husbandry, genotyping, and collecting organs and tissues; isolates cells from mouse tissues.

Performs a variety of laboratory experiments in cellular and molecular biology.

Performs Western blotting and ELISA; performs immunostaining on cells and tissues; maintains cell lines.

Places lab orders and is responsible for lab organization, including freezer and fridge organization; performs data management and prepares data for presentation in lab meetings and other formats.

Interacts with lab staff and helps design slide and manuscript figures using software including Illustrator, Photoshop, Prism, and Microsoft Office.

Helps with lab staff projects when needed.

Carries out molecular biology assays on cell cultures and animal tissues.
