Supermicro® is a top tier provider of advanced server, storage, and networking solutions for data centers worldwide. Supermicro is the #5 fastest growing company among the Silicon Valley Top 50 technology firms.
Job Summary Supermicro seeks an experienced staff data center mechanical engineer to design mechanical systems for advanced AI and hyperscale data centers. This role standardizes mechanical frameworks, including OPR and BOD documents, ensuring facilities meet high standards for performance, reliability, and energy efficiency.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Lead the mechanical design scope for new and retrofit data centers, covering air- and liquid-cooling systems, and design the systems to meet redundancy and efficiency targets.
Develop and maintain mechanical design standards, OPRs, and BODs for all Supermicro data center programs.
Perform load calculations, system sizing, and equipment selection for pumps, chillers, cooling towers, dry coolers, and heat exchangers.
Collaborate with electrical, controls, and architectural teams to optimize overall facility layout, energy use, and serviceability.
Provide engineering oversight for plumbing and fire‑protection system design, ensuring full code compliance and integration with mechanical infrastructure.
Review consultant and contractor drawings, specifications, and submittals to verify accuracy and adherence to Supermicro standards.
Be familiar with OCP standards such as facility design and liquid‑cooling requirements, and with ASHRAE guidelines for thermal management and environmental control.
Support commissioning activities, including factory acceptance testing (FAT), site inspections, and integrated systems testing (IST).
Identify and evaluate new cooling technologies such as rear‑door heat exchangers, immersion cooling, and liquid‑to‑liquid heat‑transfer systems.
Lead energy‑efficiency initiatives aimed at improving PUE and WUE across all projects.
Manage mechanical system risk assessments and provide mitigation strategies during design and construction phases.
Interface with utilities and permitting authorities to ensure smooth project execution and compliance.
Document lessons learned and contribute to continuous improvement of mechanical design templates and workflows.
Additional Responsibilities
Mentor engineers and teams as mechanical systems expert.
Train internal staff and join design and commissioning events.
Assess vendors, review equipment, and test standard components.
Keep up with ASHRAE TC 9.9, sustainability, and new mechanical tech for dense computing.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering or related field
At least 10 years’ experience designing mission‑critical or hyperscale data centers
PE license required
Expertise in HVAC: chilled‑water, condenser‑water, air‑handling systems
Knowledge of wet/dry mechanical systems, plumbing, fire protection
Able to lead mechanical design from concept to commissioning
Experience managing multidisciplinary teams and external consultants
Familiar with U.S. and international codes (ASHRAE, NFPA, ISO, local AHJ)
Strong analytical and communication skills; detail‑oriented
Willing to travel up to 50% domestically/internationally
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s in Mechanical Engineering
Data center cooling systems experience, including high‑density and modular integration
Skilled in CFD analysis and BIM/Revit for airflow, thermal, and spatial planning
Managed mechanical work for prefabricated or modular data centers
Proven vendor collaboration, system optimization, and infrastructure delivery
Salary Range $200,000 - $245,000
The salary offered will depend on several factors, including your location, level, education, training, specific skills, years of experience, and comparison to other employees already in this role. In addition to a comprehensive benefits package, candidates may be eligible for other forms of compensation, such as participation in bonus and equity award programs.
