Position Overview McKinney Specialty Labs is seeking a Technical Director to lead second‑shift operations in our analytical laboratory in Richmond, Virginia. This role is responsible for ensuring scientific excellence, operational efficiency, and regulatory compliance across analytical testing activities.

The Technical Director will provide hands‑on technical and managerial leadership to a team of chemists and analysts, ensuring high‑quality results, instrument readiness, and a culture of accountability and continuous improvement. The Technical Director reports to the Director of Chemistry.

This role is an adjusted full‑time schedule. The shift is Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday; 7am to 5pm. This is a full‑time position and will be key in keeping our lab running 7 days a week.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Scientific & Technical Leadership

Provide advanced technical oversight of analytical testing activities, including method execution, troubleshooting, and data review.

Guide analysts in chromatography and spectroscopy techniques such as HPLC/UPLC, GC, LC‑MS/MS, GC‑MS, ICP‑MS, UV‑Vis, FT‑IR, KF, and TOC.

Oversee method verifications, validations, and transfers to ensure suitability for routine use.

Maintain technical standards consistent with GLP and ISO/IEC 17025 principles.

Operational Management

Direct daily second‑shift lab operations, ensuring efficiency, throughput, and on‑time data delivery.

Oversee instrument performance, calibration, preventive maintenance, and troubleshooting.

Ensure accurate documentation, data integrity, and adherence to LIMS/ELN systems.

Coordinate with the first‑shift management team to ensure seamless handoffs and communication.

Quality & Compliance

Enforce and maintain compliance with internal SOPs, FDA, and ISO standards.

Lead or support laboratory investigations (OOS, OOT, deviations, CAPAs, and change controls).

Ensure all testing documentation meets ALCOA+ and 21 CFR Part 11 data integrity standards.

Serve as the quality liaison for the second shift, maintaining audit readiness at all times.

People Leadership

Supervise and mentor a team of analytical scientists during the second shift.

Foster an environment of collaboration, accountability, and continuous learning.

Conduct performance reviews, support career development, and manage shift scheduling.

Safety & Environment

Uphold and promote a culture of safety in compliance with EHS/OSHA and chemical hygiene regulations.

Ensure proper handling, labeling, and disposal of chemicals and laboratory waste.

Cross‑Functional Collaboration

Work closely with QA, Sample Management, and Project Management to align on project priorities and timelines.

Communicate shift metrics, issues, and accomplishments to the Director of Chemistry Operations.

Support strategic initiatives such as process optimization, automation, and Lean improvements.

Necessary Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biochemistry, pharmaceutical sciences, or a related field.

Minimum 10 years of experience in analytical laboratory operations, with at least 3 years in a supervisory or leadership capacity.

Proficient in chromatography and spectroscopic instrumentation and data systems (e.g., Empower, Chromeleon).

Strong understanding of cGMP, GLP, or ISO 17025 laboratory practices.

Excellent leadership, communication, and problem‑solving skills.

Willingness to work the designated second‑shift schedule (Friday–Monday, 10 hours per day).

Preferred Skills

Master’s or Ph.D. in a scientific discipline.

Experience in tobacco, pharmaceutical, or specialty chemical testing environments.

Background in method development, validation, or technology transfer.

Familiarity with Lean/Six Sigma and data‑driven performance management.
