Job Description Summary:

The Faculty Optometrist in the Department of Ophthalmology provides clinical, teaching and research duties, as their experience and interest allows. This position also supervises medical students and residents in clinics and participates in the didactic teaching program. Faculty interested in research may be afforded protected time to complete clinical and bench research, and will be encouraged to participate in clinical research and scientific presentations at national/regional meetings in addition to their clinical and teaching duties.

Key Roles and Responsibilities

Provide services as an Optometrist, comprising comprehensive clinics for all ages.

Participate in the didactic teaching program including supervising medical students and residents.

Participate in JayDoc clinics.

Maintain a professional and courteous relationship with patients as monitored by the hospital's patient experience survey.

Serve on departmental committees and provide other service to the School of Medicine and the University as needed.

Participate in clinical research and presentations at national/regional meetings as appropriate.

Provide clinical and surgical services to the VA and/or other sites under the Professional Services Agreement with The University of Kansas Health System.

Required Qualifications Education:

Doctor of Optometry Degree (OD) from an accredited School of Optometry.

Licensed in the State of Kansas or eligible for licensure in Kansas.

Board eligible or board certified in Optometry.

Preferred Qualifications Work Experience:

Experience with fitting and care coordination of medically necessary contact lenses and managing postoperative care for specialty surgeons.

Academic background involving teaching with interest in clinical or basic research.

Experience in developing own research programs and obtaining funding from public and private sources.
