In this role, you’ll:
Care for the Zoo’s horticultural landscapes, gardens, and irrigation systems.
Prune, plant, and maintain vibrant plant collections that enhance habitats for our animals and delight our guests.
Operate irrigation and water supply systems and perform general custodial duties to keep the Zoo safe and beautiful.
Guide seasonal staff and assist with special projects to support a sustainable and attractive environment.

Essential Functions
Assists with maintenance of irrigation system, including adjusting sprinkler heads, system timer clocks, repairing valves, installing and retrofitting systems, repairing pipes and seasonal start-up and winterization. Operates a variety of equipment.
Performs and assists with ground maintenance by assessing plant health and participating in appropriate tasks. Decides watering requirements and adjusts systems accordingly. Identifies and treats for pest infestations. Applies fertilizer and sprays leaves broadly. Prunes trees and shrubs and conducts large scale turf mowing and trimming.
Performs routine tasks with specific instructions and set procedures. Handles basic issues and problems and refers complex issues to higher-level staff.
Performs other duties as assigned. Nothing in this job description restricts management's right to assign or reassign duties and responsibilities to this position at any time.
Requirements
Required Knowledge, Experience, And Training
High school diploma or equivalent and two years of experience in grounds maintenance, operation and repair of irrigation and water supply systems.
Knowledge of:
Pruning trees and shrubs
Large scale turf mowing and trimming
Irrigation system hydraulics
Pumping systems control power
Computer usage including related software
Ability to:
Operate light, medium and heavy power equipment
Make emergency repairs to irrigation equipment
Perform backflow testing
Communicate effectively in the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance
Perform all essential functions as assigned by an authorized employee, supervisor and/or manager with or without a reasonable accommodation
Individuals must be capable of operating vehicles safely and have an acceptable driving record.
Preferred Knowledge, Experience, And Training
Four years of experience in municipal landscape or irrigation maintenance.
Licensing And Other Requirements
Valid state-issued driver's license.
Idaho Pesticide Operators License issued by the Idaho State Department of Agriculture.
Backflow Assembly Tester certification issued by the Idaho Bureau of Occupational Licenses.
Landscape technician certification.
Special Requirements
Applicants must be able to pass:
City of Boise background check processes which includes a criminal history check and reference checks in accordance with the City of Boise Hiring Process Regulation

Work includes sensory ability to talk, hear, smell and touch. Work in this position also includes close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and depth perception. Working Environment
The work environment will include outdoor weather conditions. Employees are exposed to mechanical and electrical hazards and work in/at heights. Employees will also drive a vehicle as part of this position. Work includes protected exposure to chemicals.
