The Executive Director (ED) serves as the chief administrative officer of AVFRD, responsible for the overall leadership, management, and growth of the organization. The ED works closely with the Board of Directors, operational leadership, staff, volunteers, and community partners to advance AVFRD’s mission. This role balances nonprofit administration with the unique requirements of a volunteer fire and rescue organization, ensuring strong governance, sound financial stewardship, effective recruitment and retention programs, and meaningful community engagement. Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Strategy
Provide vision and leadership in collaboration with the Board of Directors to advance AVFRD’s mission. Implement strategic goals, policies, and initiatives adopted by the Board. Support and strengthen volunteer engagement and retention, fostering a culture of inclusivity, service, and accountability. Administration & Operations
Oversee day‑to‑day business operations, including HR, finance, facilities, vendor management, and regulatory compliance. Supervise paid staff and contractors; support volunteer leaders in fulfilling their roles. Maintain accurate records, policies, and SOPs in compliance with nonprofit standards and applicable laws. Ensure proper risk management practices, insurance coverage, and adherence to safety protocols. Financial Management
Develop, oversee, and manage the annual budget in coordination with the Treasurer. Ensure sound fiscal policies, accounting practices, and reporting systems are in place. Supervise fundraising, donor relations, and grant management activities. Monitor purchasing and procurement processes, including oversight of contracts, leases, and large expenditures. Community & Public Relations
Serve as a primary representative of AVFRD with the community, partner organizations, donors, and local government. Strengthen AVFRD’s visibility through media, social platforms, and public events. Foster strong relationships with Loudoun County Fire & Rescue, corporate sponsors, community organizations, and residents. Board Relations & Governance
Partner with the Board to ensure effective governance, transparency, and accountability. Provide timely and accurate reports to the Board on operations, finances, and strategic priorities. Support Board recruitment, training, and development. Qualifications
Education & Experience
Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree in nonprofit management, public administration, business, or related field preferred. Minimum of 3‑5 years of progressive leadership experience in nonprofit management, public safety administration, or related sector. Demonstrated experience in fundraising, donor relations, and grant management. Knowledge of fire/rescue or emergency services organizations strongly preferred. Skills & Competencies
Strong leadership, organizational, and problem‑solving skills. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to engage diverse stakeholders. Proven track record of managing staff, volunteers, and complex budgets. Familiarity with nonprofit governance, IRS compliance, and financial management systems (QuickBooks, DonorPerfect, Procurify, etc.). Ability to balance strategic vision with day‑to‑day operational management. Compensation & Benefits
