The Role Maintains smooth operation of local area, worldwide and virtual private networks (VPN). Plans, evaluates and coordinates installation or reconfiguration of hardware and software elements of data and/or voice communication networks. Maintains technical expertise in all network and computer hardware and software interconnections, such as routers, multiplexers, firewalls, hubs, bridges and gateways. May propose solutions to management to ensure all communications requirements are met for current usage and future needs, configuring solutions to optimize cost savings. Prepares or ensures that appropriate network documentation exists, including operational instructions. Provides regular monitoring and network analysis and short‑ and long‑term planning for in‑house systems. May coordinate third‑party maintenance and may design portion of the network, including selection of hardware and software packages. The successful candidate will be expected to create and drive policy and processes for network and telecom evaluations, installations, upgrades and problem resolution. This position requires work outside normal business hours, on weekends and provides rotational on‑call support.

Must Have

Bachelor’s Degree and 0 years of relevant exempt experience.

Equivalent qualifications may include: NNS Apprentice School graduate

Navy Nuclear Power School (NNPS) graduate

Associate’s Degree or other formal 2‑year program with 2 years of relevant exempt experience or 4 years of non‑exempt experience

Military Paygrade E‑5 or above

High School/GED with 4 years combined of manufacturing, shipbuilding, trades, military or other relevant exempt experience

High School/GED with 8 years combined of manufacturing, shipbuilding, trades, military or other relevant non‑exempt experience

Relevant professional certification can substitute a Bachelor's Degree.

Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) or other Cisco certifications are a plus.

Nice to Have

Basic understanding of networking administration principles.

BS/BA in Information Technology.

Knowledge of firewall administration and application of company security policies.

Experience with Cisco IOS 15.x and 17.x, TCP/IP, routing, switching, DNS, DHCP.

Competency with TCP/UDP protocols including HTTP, SSL/TLS, FTP, SSH, SNMP, NTP and SYSLOG.

Ability to implement LAN‑to‑LAN VPNs.

Basic understanding of UNIX and Windows server operating systems.

Proficiency with troubleshooting tools such as Wireshark and tcpdump.

Academic experience with system and network security, authentication and security protocols.

Strong oral and written communication skills.
