Position Highlights: Join the Photogrammetry Program at the Lunar and Planetary Laboratory (LPL), a leader in producing high-quality planetary topographic data from active NASA and ESA missions. This position contributes to a range of projects by applying novel photogrammetric methods and plays a key role in training students, scientists, and engineers. Responsibilities include generating digital terrain models (DTMs) and orthorectified images of planetary surfaces using SOCET/GXP, Ames Stereo Pipeline, and other advanced software within LPL’s state‑of‑the‑art photogrammetry facilities. This position is subject to federal ITAR/EAR regulations.

Duties & Responsibilities
Conduct photogrammetric processing of planetary image data using established workflows (e.g., ISIS/SOCET‑GXP), independently resolving complex technical challenges and ensuring data integrity.
Oversee operations across two research labs, including supervision of undergraduate student employees, delivery of training, and implementation of quality assurance protocols.
Lead production activities in collaboration with project supervisors, instrument teams, and research partners to ensure timely and accurate data outputs.
Facilitate the development of new automated processing methods, encompassing software design and testing, version control using systems such as Git, and preparation of documentation suitable for public archiving.
Manage and maintain existing software systems, performing routine updates and resolving bugs to ensure continued functionality and performance.
Advance the development of processing systems for flight instruments, by applying innovations in photogrammetry and exploring novel techniques to enhance scientific capabilities.
Contribute strategically to new instrument proposals, research grants, and outreach initiatives, by providing technical expertise and leadership in collaborative efforts.
Serve as a key contributor on proposals to NASA R&A solicitations and other funding opportunities, helping to expand program scope and foster innovation.
Lead select community outreach initiatives, including the exploration of emerging 3D data visualization technologies such as 3D printing and VR/AR to enhance public engagement.
Oversee production database integrity, ensuring accurate record keeping and data traceability across projects.
Provide regular updates to supervisors and external stakeholders, and prepare comprehensive reports for program managers to inform strategic planning and decision‑making.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
Knowledge of database management or query languages (MySQL, FileMaker Pro).
Knowledge of Mac, Windows, and Unix operating systems.
Knowledge of planetary image processing software such as ISIS.
Knowledge of planetary data and the Planetary Data System archive.
Skill in remote sensing image processing techniques.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to perform data verification and validation.
Ability to train people at all skill levels and from varied backgrounds.
Ability to manage multiple projects.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in geoscience, geography, mathematics, or related field or equivalent advanced learning attained through experience required.
Minimum of five years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
At least five years of professional experience in photogrammetry.
Preferred Qualifications
Proficiency with BAE Systems SOCET SET/SOCET GXP.
Proficiency with software development using Perl, Python, MATLAB, C++, Unix shell scripting, or similar, and knowledge of version tracking practices such as Git.
Experience, education, or training in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) such as ArcPro or QGIS.
