Police Officer (Recruit)
Location: Santa Fe County, NM
SIGNING BONUS:
Each new hire who successfully completes Field Training receives $5,000. Additionally, 24 hours of Recognition Leave is granted.
Under general supervision, the officer performs general and specialized law‑enforcement duties for the County Police Department. Responsibilities include protecting lives, property, and public rights; investigating criminal activity; serving criminal process papers; and assisting in community functions. The officer is also responsible for preparing files, reports and records, and testifying in court. Employees must exercise tact and firmness in public contact and exercise independent judgment in performing assigned tasks. The position is subject to the usual hazards of law‑enforcement work.

Essential Job Functions
Patrol an assigned area using a police vehicle to detect and deter criminal activity, monitor radio calls, and inspect business establishments.
Answer complaint calls, investigate crimes and disturbances, interview witnesses, gather evidence, apprehend suspects, and prepare investigation reports.
Serve legal papers such as summons, warrants and civil process papers; explain the papers served; and make arrests when necessary.
Prepare case files, offense reports, accident reports, tow sheets, property vouchers, lab requests, and other required forms.
Handle citizen complaints and inquiries.
Transport prisoners and mental patients, serve mental papers, and provide first aid at accident scenes.
Investigate accidents, secure and clear scenes, direct traffic, and examine fatalities.
Investigate misdemeanor and felony crimes, conduct building checks, and report traffic hazards.
Process minor crime scenes: collect, package, and voucher evidence, photograph scenes, and prepare felony case reports.
Monitor vehicle speeds with radar, operate a breathalyzer machine, conduct criminal driving checks, and issue summonses.
Conduct surveillance and assist State and Federal agencies in investigations; prepare affidavits and search warrants; testifying in court.
Teach program modules, prepare visual aids, lesson plans, and handouts; participate in extracurricular activities and community outreach.
Coordinate recruitment, training sessions, and physical agility tests; administer background checks.
Operate the crime‑line public access phone, maintain records, and coordinate with the Crime Stoppers International program.
Serve as media contact: provide interviews, interviews, and materials to the media; attend major media events.
Order and issue uniforms and equipment for departmental personnel.
Process arrest information, update warrant books, and execute state and local criminal warrants.
Coordinate with civic leagues and community groups; liaise with schools and student bodies.
Monitor school facilities, promote safety, and provide counsel to teachers, students, and parents.
Teach boating safety and conduct marine patrol.
Additional Duties
Escort funeral processions, parades, public figures, and special assignments.
Investigate communicable diseases; coordinate medical care and record keeping.
Assist disabled motorists with simple repairs and directions.
Report unsafe conditions on city streets, sidewalks, and public facilities.
Participate in public safety campaigns and child‐fingerprinting projects.
Notify next of kin of deaths and accidents.
Train and supervise new officers; serve as instructor for the Police Academy.
Maintain police vehicles and issued equipment; maintain firearms proficiency.
Perform other related duties as required.
Required Qualifications
High‑school graduation or GED.
Valid driver’s license with a minimum of a -3 point value.
Physical agility testing acceptance.
Basic Law Enforcement test passed within one year of employment.
40 hours of in‑service training every two years.
Medical examination by a licensed physician.
Psychological examination by a licensed psychologist or psychiatrist.
Background investigation according to the City of Suffolk guidelines.
Polygraph examination by a qualified examiner.
Successful completion of any compulsory minimum training standards for a Police Officer as required by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services Board.
Disqualifying Factors
Any felony conviction.
Domestic violence conviction.
Any drug‑related convictions or offenses.
Class 1 or 2 misdemeanor within the last five years, excluding traffic violations.
Embezzlement or misappropriation of funds.
Criminal history involving child/elder abuse or neglect.
Illicit possession of controlled substances or anabolic steroids within the last five years.
Driving offenses: four or more negative points, DUI convictions, eluding police, failing drug tests, license revocation.
Bankruptcy cases exceeding two.
Ineligibility to possess a firearm in Virginia.
Body modifications (tattoos, piercings, scarification) that interfere with department standards.
