Position: Health and Safety Specialist

Location: Cottonton, AL
Opportunity The Mahrt mill produces high quality packaging coated paperboard and is highly profitable. Year after year Mahrt continues to deliver unprecedented safety, reliability, production, and financial results. The Health and Safety Specialist provides technical consulting support and leadership to the Mahrt Mill to ensure sustainable compliance and reduce the frequency and severity of occupational injuries and illnesses and associated workers’ compensation costs. This role also leads portions of the Fire and Emergency Response teams at the mill. The Health and Safety Specialist reports directly to the Director of Health and Safety.
How you will impact
Support the implementation of the WestRock Annual Safety and Health Strategy to achieve a Zero Injury Culture.
Plan and implement safety policies and procedures in compliance with local, state, and federal OSHA rules and regulations.
Support the Hazard Recognition and Control Processes that identify and control physical hazards through on‑site inspections.
Inspect organization facilities to detect existing or potential accident and health hazards, determine corrective or preventative measures where indicated, and follow up to ensure measures have been implemented.
Lead the investigation of accidents and injuries and cooperate in the preparation of material and evidence for organization use in hearings, lawsuits, and insurance investigations.
Participate in and often lead portions of the Fire and Emergency response teams at the location.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Biology, or Chemistry (desired).
5+ years of safety experience in a heavy industrial environment.
EMT license and/or Fire Response training (preferred).
Experience with regulatory compliance, incident investigation, and safety engineering.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Excellent organizational skills – able to prioritize and meet deadlines in a fast‑paced environment; strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.
Experience with Microsoft Office Suite including MS Excel (required).
Experience with safety software – GenSuite or similar software.
Up to 10% travel may be required.
