Main Purpose of Job The Correctional Officer Sergeant provides critical correctional knowledge and support to the Intelligence and Investigative Division (IID) Watch Center. Acting with integrity and urgency, the role operates multi‑channel police radios, telephones, and computer terminals to handle incident reporting and dispatching information. The sergeant facilitates the reporting and investigation of serious and emergency incidents involving incarcerated individuals or correctional officers and serves as a liaison for timely information distribution throughout the DPSCS agency.

Position Duties Watch Center operations are driven by real‑time events. Priorities shift continuously and responsibilities are handled in a rolling cycle based on the immediate needs of each phone call.

Monitoring and Incident Management

Continuously monitor informational feeds, alerts, and events from multiple sources to track potential threats and incidents.

Answer incoming calls from correctional facilities, following established procedures to record, analyze, and disseminate information.

Record incidents in the Records Management System (RMS).

Monitor the violation status of individuals on the Central Home Detention Program using the BI Total Access Global Positioning System.

Collaboration and Information Analysis

Partner with Correctional Officer Lieutenants and the Watch Center Manager to gather and analyze information, identifying key issues and trends.

Coordinate resources and actions with different departments, agencies, and geographic areas during response and recovery efforts.

Assist Police Communication Operators, Correctional Officer Lieutenants, and Correctional Officers to maintain consistency in processes and communication.

Reporting and Dissemination

Create written and digital reports detailing daily actions and incidents.

Evaluate the nature and scope of correctional facility incidents to recommend organizational responses to CO Lieutenants and the Watch Center Manager.

Assist Correctional Officer Lieutenants to dispatch detectives to serious incident scenes and send urgent email notifications as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

High School diploma or equivalency certificate accepted by the Maryland State Board of Education.

Three years of experience as a Correctional Officer involving custody and security of adult inmates.

Notes

The educational requirement is set by the Correctional Training Commission.

Candidates may substitute additional education at a rate of sixty credit hours for one year of experience, with a minimum of fifteen credit hours in criminal justice or related social sciences.

Candidates may substitute equivalent state experience in other correctional classifications that involve daily contact with inmates.

Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience equivalent to a Correctional Officer II.

Limitations on Selection

Position limited to current DPSCS employees who are current Sergeants or eligible for promotion to Sergeant.

Licenses, Registrations and Certifications

Must possess a valid Maryland motor vehicle operator’s license if duties require operating a motor vehicle.

Must hold a Class B Commercial Driver’s License with passenger and air brakes endorsements if duties require operating a bus for inmate transportation.

Special Requirements

Must be U.S. Citizenship or Resident Alien status.

Must be at least 21 years of age.

Must complete a background investigation.

Must attend an oral interview.

Must undergo a physical examination.

Employees hired or reinstated on or after July 1, 2016 must complete Entrance Level Firearms Training and demonstrate proficiency on a periodic basis.

Must be available 24 hours a day with a reachable telephone number.

Must undergo substance abuse testing in accordance with state regulations.

Benefits
