Accountant I Payroll

Position Summary
Under the supervision of the Senior Accountant, this position is responsible for all aspects of payroll activities. The role compiles, monitors, verifies and reconciles financial data in the District's payroll and benefit transactions to apply accurate fiscal management policies, procedures and internal controls for the District. Responsibilities
Prepares and processes bi-weekly payroll. Maintains a strong focus on accuracy and meeting regularly scheduled deadlines. Ensures appropriate deductions in accordance with State, Federal, FICA and Medicare regulations. Reviews time sheets, wage computations, earnings, deductions, leave accruals and other information to detect and reconcile payroll discrepancies. Processes onboarding and compensation changes for current/new/re-hires. Maintains accurate employee information in all payroll systems. Processes other transactions such as annual wage adjustments, backpay, and employment separation payments. Monitors the accurate and timely reporting of quarterly and year-end information to federal and state government agencies. Reconciles total wages per W-2 to year-to-date (YTD) Payroll Register and general ledger at year end. Oversees annual W2 preparation and distribution to current and past employees. Assists the Finance Director and Senior Accountant with annual audits by providing supporting schedules, documentation, and reports as needed. Effectively handles a variety of customer situations and is responsible for maintaining excellent customer and employee relations. Responds promptly to customer inquiries, handles and resolves customer complaints in an appropriate manner. Monitors accrued vacation, sick, personal, holiday, comp time, and other types of employee leave balances in accordance with District policies. Calculates manual payroll checks and prepares requests for payments as needed. Responsible for reconciliation of all payroll-related accounts including liability accounts for FICA, Medicare, Federal and State Withholding, and various employee deductions. Maintains current knowledge of State and Federal laws and regulations and District pay policies. Implements updates and changes in coordination with Human Resources. Provides technical information and instruction regarding payroll procedures and methods to staff. Answers staff questions and resolves issues. Attends and participates in staff meetings, trainings, and orientations. Attends work on a regular, reliable, and punctual basis. Qualifications
Associate degree in Accounting or Finance. One (1) year of experience in Accounting or Finance. Any combination of experience, training and education that demonstrates the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position may be considered. Must have solid organizational skills, accuracy, and attention to detail. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Project, and Internet Explorer. Skills in data management and report development. The ability to successfully analyze data, meet deadlines and provide professional documents and complex reports under tight deadlines. Ability to work with minimal oversight and to assume responsibility for multiple tasks from initiation to completion. Attention to detail, accuracy and maintaining a high level of confidentiality is critical in this position. Must be highly motivated and take direction well with excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbally. Ability to work independently and with a team in a fast‑paced and high‑volume environment with emphasis on accuracy and timeliness. Ability to provide outstanding customer service and get along with coworkers, patrons, and supervisors and interact with employees and vendors in a professional manner. Benefits
