Sedgwick County Zoo Education Specialist, Teen & Adult Programs Job Summary
Researches, creates, and presents teen and adult educational programs on-and off-site that highlight the Zoo’s mission. Leads students and adults in presentations and hands‑on activities, including Zookeeper Apprentice, Education volunteers, and internship programs using positive engagement skills. Coordinates year‑round teen and monthly senior citizen programming. Facilitates training for staff and community for citizen science programs. Consults on program development and implements programs in other age groups, as needed. Supervises applicable staff. Utilizes artifacts and animals in a professional manner.
Primary Job Functions
Program Development
Create education programs that align with State curricular standards and current educational trends, as well as hands‑on career based experiences.
Create programs for adults and families, including evening experiences that engage the audience with the Zoo’s mission. Utilize artifacts and animals professionally in programs.
Collaborate with program staff, other personnel, and a variety of community resources for the purpose of improving the overall quality of programs and achieving the Zoo’s mission.
Communicate lesson plans and instructional requirements to staff as needed.
Budget for, and purchase supplies necessary for programs.
Create surveys and collect data to measure program impact and effectiveness.
Program Facilitation
Facilitation of on‑and‑off‑site programs primarily to teen and adult audiences or to other audiences as needed.
Lead students and adults in presentations and hands‑on activities using positive engagement skills.
Ability to speak to a variety of ages, learning levels and abilities at the same time, while holding interest and engaging the audience.
Ability to adjust techniques and methods as needed to be most effective.
Prepares supplies and technology necessary to facilitate programs.
Handle, train, and maintain ambassador animals as required in front of diverse audiences.
Teach and oversee citizen science programs.
Supervision of Staff
Supervise part‑time seasonal staff.
Plan, schedule and assign work duties within area.
Train and mentor staff, recognize performance deficiencies and take corrective action when needed.
Regularly update Curator on staff performance or scheduling concerns.
Participate in a variety of meetings and professional development activities for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions and to improve achievement.
Secondary Job Functions
Interact regularly and provide customer service to the zoo defined customers – collections, contractors, co‑workers, donors, students, professional colleagues, vendors, visitors & volunteers.
Use time efficiently to complete assigned tasks. Actively seek ways to streamline processes and stay open to new ideas and approaches.
Demonstrate and maintain current AZA knowledge of an animal care, behavior, handling, natural history, and terminology.
Represent the Zoo and/or Sedgwick County at various off‑site events such as regional, national, and international conferences, meetings, community events, outreach programs, etc.
Experience Required Minimum Qualifications: Two years coursework in related field from an accredited college or university. Experience in a teaching environment. Any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Valid US Driver’s License without restrictions. Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree in Zoology, Biology, Education, or Recreation Management from an accredited college or university. 1‑3 years’ experience in an AZA Facility Education Program. Professional animal handling experience such as zookeeper or at a rehab facility.
