HEAVY EQUIPMENT OPERATOR — Fulton County Public Works Department

Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Minimum of three years’ experience in construction, repair, or maintenance of public infrastructure or related field.
- Or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience providing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
License and Certification Requirements
- Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia Class B Commercial Driver’s License.
- Some assignments may require a Georgia Class A CDL and/or special endorsements.
- Must obtain and maintain Flagging Certification within the department’s established timeframes.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Proficient in operating track and large rubber‑tired equipment.
- Demonstrated ability to perform essential functions and to learn, comprehend, and apply all county or departmental policies, practices, and procedures.
Examination
The examination will comprise an evaluation of education and experience based on the application. Applicants must document that they possess the minimum knowledge, skills, education, and experience outlined to be rated as qualified. If selected, an official, accredited college transcript is required at the time of employment for all degrees/coursework used to qualify for this position.

Purpose of Classification
To operate track or rubber‑tired construction equipment with specialized functions related to maintenance and construction activities where the operation requires highest skill, dexterity, and fidelity, performed to exacting tolerances.
Essential Functions
- Maneuver heavy equipment and operate complex mechanisms involving digging, moving earth and materials, grading, loading, and similar tasks to advance construction and maintenance of county roads, grounds, utilities, rights‑of‑way, and other infrastructure.
- Operate excavators, track hoes, backhoes for skilled digging and trenching for maintenance and construction projects requiring exact tolerances.
- Operate loaders with large volume capacity to load materials into trucks or move them short distances.
- Operate motor‑grader, scraper, and excavator with blade attachment to set gradients for large construction projects, controlling height, angle, and pitch.
- Operate bulldozer, scraper, and compactor to move earth, gravel, sand, and other materials for construction and maintenance projects.
- Inspect and prepare equipment for safe operation; perform light maintenance (oil change, refueling, lubricants); clean vehicles and equipment.
- Transport, load, and unload materials and equipment used in projects.
- Perform manual labor supporting construction and maintenance: lift, move, load, unload, dig ditches, trenches, move supplies, and remove debris.
- Follow established safety procedures, use protective gear, monitor traffic conditions, flag and direct traffic, and report incidents.
- Complete work orders, time cards, maintenance reports, spray records, and other documentation.
- Communicate with supervisors, employees, other departments, the public, and others to coordinate work activities and resolve problems.
Additional Functions
- Operate lower‑level equipment and trucks included in the job family.
- Provide coverage during special events/activities.
- Respond to emergency/disaster situations and provide assistance to other employees or departments.
- Perform other related duties as required.
