A Heavy Iron Field Mechanic is responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining heavy construction equipment directly in the field to keep operations running safely, efficiently, and with minimal downtime. This role requires advanced technical expertise, strong problem-solving skills, and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced heavy civil environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform field diagnostics, troubleshooting, and repairs on heavy equipment such as excavators, loaders, dozers, scrapers, backhoes, skid steers, graders, and other diesel-powered machinery.
- Conduct both scheduled preventative maintenance and emergency repairs on job sites or remote locations.
- Utilize electronic diagnostic tools, hydraulic schematics, electrical diagrams, and OEM service manuals to identify equipment issues accurately.
- Fabricate, weld, and modify components as needed to support field repairs.
- Maintain thorough service logs, work orders, and parts usage records.
- Operate service trucks equipped with tools, compressors, welders, and diagnostic equipment.
- Communicate clearly with equipment managers, foremen, and project supervisors regarding repair timelines and equipment condition.
- Prioritize safety, following all OSHA and company protocols while working in active construction zones.
Requirements
- 5–7+ years of experience as a heavy equipment mechanic (field experience strongly preferred).
- Proficiency in diagnosing and repairing diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, and heavy equipment drive-trains.
- Ability to read and interpret schematics, service manuals, and diagnostic codes.
- Must have a valid driver’s license; CDL preferred.
- Ability to lift 50–75 lbs and work in various outdoor conditions.
- Strong communication, time-management, and problem-solving skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- OEM training or certifications
- Welding and fabrication experience.
- Experience working in heavy civil, mining, utility, or industrial construction environments.
Compensation: $50-$65/hr based on experience, health insurance, 2 weeks vacation
