Duties & Responsibilities Purpose of Functional Assignment: Under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN), Physician, or assigned licensed clinical staff, performs technical and supportive duties in the delivery of patient care during endoscopic procedures. As a member of the endoscopy team, the technician assists with equipment preparation and patient care for acutely ill, ambulatory, and long‑term patients undergoing diagnostic and therapeutic gastrointestinal procedures.
Examples Of Typical Tasks
Prepares the endoscopy suite, ensuring proper functioning of scopes, light sources, suction devices, and other equipment.
Assists with patient positioning, draping, and pre‑procedure setup under the direction of the Endoscopist or RN.
Assists healthcare professional during procedure, anticipating and passing instruments (e.g., biopsy forceps, snares, clips).
Maintains strict aseptic technique during procedures and scope reprocessing.
May perform high‑level disinfection of endoscopes and accessories per facility protocols, monitoring for and reporting breaches in sterile technique or equipment malfunctions.
Escorts and prepares patients for procedures, providing reassurance and explanations.
Assists with post‑procedure care, including monitoring vital signs, transferring patients, and applying dressings.
Adheres to infection control policies (e.g., proper disposal of biohazardous waste, sharps safety).
Restocks procedure rooms, ensuring PAR levels are maintained and expired supplies are removed.
Troubleshoots equipment issues and coordinates with appropriate facility departments for repairs or replacements.
Accurately documents equipment usage, specimen labeling, and patient care in electronic medical records (EMR).
Ensures compliance with hospital policies and HIPAA regulations.
Assists with inventory management and ordering of endoscopy‑specific supplies.
Assists with emergency interventions (e.g., bleeding control, airway management) under RN/physician direction.
May perform glucometer readings as needed.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma or equivalent, approved by a State’s Department of Education or a recognized accrediting organization and three (3) years of direct patient care experience; OR
Associate’s Degree from an accredited college or university and two (2) years of experience, as described in section 1 above.
Preferred Certification(s)/Licenses
Completion of an Endoscopy Technician training program or possession of a gastrointestinal (GI)/endoscopy certification.
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from American Heart Association (AHA) within ninety (90) days of appointment.
Required Knowledge Areas
Infection control and patient safety standards.
Other Training Requirements
Must complete internal Infection Prevention & Control Training.
