Safety Management Systems Specialist This position supports and enhances the agency's safety management systems (SMS). This position will contribute to developing, deploying, and maintaining safety processes and tools that assure compliance with regulatory, company, and other safety requirements. This position's collaborative efforts with various departments will help foster a unified approach toward safety and risk management, ultimately contributing to a robust safety culture, regulatory compliance, and the well‑being of our passengers and staff.

Essential Responsibilities

Annual review and update of the System Safety Program Plan (SSPP) and Public Transportation Agency Safety Plan (PTASP), ensuring compliance with federal, state, and organizational safety regulations.

Implement and oversee safety management systems, processes, and tools to maintain organization‑wide compliance and safety standards.

Update safety policies and procedures in line with regulatory changes for safety compliance.

Monitor and assess projects for adherence to safety standards, identify potential hazards, and contribute to mitigation strategies.

Create and disseminate safety educational materials and engage in outreach to enhance employee safety awareness.

Lead and participate in safety committees, analyze safety data to identify trends, and develop safety performance indicators and metrics.

Conduct accident/incident investigations and hazard risk assessments and facilitate risk assessment discussions and exercises.

Coordinate and deliver SMS training programs and support staff development within the safety management domain.

Effectively communicate safety rules, policies, and procedures, fostering a culture of safety aligned with agency goals.

Maintain accurate records for safety assessments, training, meetings, and corrective actions, and prepare documentation for audits.

Other Responsibilities : All job‑related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

A bachelor's degree in safety management, industrial hygiene, engineering, or a related field is preferred.

A minimum of five years of experience in system safety assurance, certification, and reporting with a strong understanding of safety data, data analysis, and trends.

Valid driver's license and acceptable MVR.

Preferred Qualifications

Professional Safety or Auditor certification preferred.

Transportation Safety and Security Program (TSSP) Certification or Public Transportation Safety Certification Training Program (PTSCTP) required or the ability to achieve certification within three years of hire.

Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) preferred.

Previous experience working in a highly regulated environment preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of methods and techniques of safety inspection and investigation

Proficiency in hazard analysis, safety design criteria, and resolution processes

Proficiency in reading and interpreting schematic diagrams and plans

Familiarity with federal, state, and local safety regulations, including FTA, FRA, OSHA, NFPA, and DOT standards, is preferred.

Understanding the principles and practices of public transportation safety and security programs is a plus.

Strong analytical skills to interpret safety data and trends.

Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, for the development and delivery of safety training and presentations.

Proficiency in using safety management software and data analysis and reporting tools.

A willingness to engage in ongoing professional development and to stay current with emerging safety regulations and standards.

Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and support cross‑functional safety initiatives.

Capable of fostering a safety culture and promoting a safe work environment across all levels of the organization.

Demonstrated ability to resolve safety issues and concerns promptly, efficiently, and effectively.

Proficient in maintaining accurate safety records and preparing documentation for audits and regulatory compliance checks.

Pay Range $92,003.00 - $129,954.50 Annual
