Position Summary

Music Therapist responsible for planning, implementing, and facilitating a comprehensive therapeutic music program to enhance cognitive functioning, creativity, self‑confidence, and socialization among residents, while supporting transitions to end of life. The role includes engaging residents at all levels of care and demonstrating the necessary assessment, planning, and service delivery skills. Job Duties

Direct and participate in instrumental and vocal music activities tailored to residents’ desires and needs, such as solo or group singing, rhythmic, and other creative music experiences. Work individually or in groups using instrumental or vocal music and music‑projective techniques, including guided imagery and progressive relaxation. Play musical instruments (e.g., keyboard, guitar, percussion) to deliver therapeutic interventions. Provide music therapy experiences addressing resident needs such as self‑care, adaptation to life changes, cognitive improvement, self‑esteem enhancement, communication, and impulse control. Engage residents in activities to identify responses to different music styles and elements (tempo, harmony). Establish treatment goals or objectives based on residents’ needs, abilities, interests, and therapeutic value. Support end‑of‑life and legacy‑building goals for residents. Select or adapt musical instruments, equipment, or non‑musical materials (adaptive devices, visual aids). Support special music‑related events (visiting artists, concerts, workshops). Conduct Bell Choir activities and support the Melody Makers Choir at Goodwin House Alexandria. Provide clinical supervision to music, art, and dance/movement interns, fostering internship/practicum partnerships with universities. Meet regulatory requirements, document in resident medical records, and participate in care planning meetings for residents actively engaged in therapy. Collaborate with the Life Enrichment team to develop workshops, special events, and music groups. Qualifications

Master's degree in music therapy with knowledge of principles, concepts, and methodology for the geriatric population. Certified Board Music Therapist (CBMT) or Music Therapist Board Certified (MT‑BC), or certification within six months of hire. Minimum one year of providing music therapy or related activities to older adults in a multidisciplinary setting. Demonstrated genuine interest in serving residents with dementia, exhibiting empathy, patience, creativity, and openness to new ideas. Benefits
