Pay Rage: $90.90 - $111.88/hr. on W2

Position Summary: The Pathologist Assistant will perform all routine functions in the surgical pathology area, including gross examination and dissection of surgical pathology specimens under appropriate supervision. This individual will assist in ensuring accuracy, efficiency, and quality within the grossing area, and may provide training, technical guidance, and competency assessments for staff.

Duties & Responsibilities: Assist the department manager/supervisor with day-to-day operations of the surgical pathology area, ensuring accurate and efficient service delivery. Perform gross examination and dissection of large, complex surgical specimens (typically hospital-based, whole organ specimens) in preparation for histologic processing. Provide technical training, instruction, and guidance to grossing staff, students, and lab assistants on techniques, instrumentation, and workflow organization. Participate in orientation, training, and competency verification of newly hired grossing staff. Conduct new hire quality control assessments for grossing personnel, including pathologist assistants, grossing technicians, and histotechnologists. Administer competency assessments, including direct observation, for grossing staff. Assist in determining the appropriate level of supervision (direct vs. indirect) for each specimen type per individual performing gross examination. Prepare non-gynecological cytology specimens (including FNA specimens) after completing required training; perform cytopreparation, staining, and cover slipping as needed. Ensure compliance with corporate safety, quality control, and assurance standards, as well as local, federal, CLIA, and CAP regulations. Troubleshoot technical and workflow issues, exercising independent judgment as appropriate.

Required: Bachelors degree in a related field. Meets all requirements for non-pathologists performing gross tissue examinations per CLIA 88 (42 CFR 493.1489) and institutional SOPs. Current state licensure (as applicable).
