Overview Ops Technical Trainer (Engineering) – Metra Commuter Rail.

Salary: $60,000 – $70,000 (Northbrook, IL).

Description Metra is one of the largest and most complex commuter rail systems in North America, serving Cook, DuPage, Will, Lake, Kane, and McHenry Counties.

The Operations Training Department designs, develops, and delivers training for the Transportation, Mechanical and Engineering Divisions in compliance with Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) and OSHA regulations.

The Mechanical Division audience includes Carmen, Electricians, Sheet Metal Workers, and Machinists; the Engineering Division audience includes the workforce employed by the Track, Signal, Capital Construction, Communications, Electrical Maintenance and Building/Bridges departments.

The Operations Technical Trainer reports to the Manager, Technical Training and supports the development and delivery of training programs to address policies and procedures governed by FRA and other regulatory agencies (DOT, APTA, OSHA, NTSB).

The primary duties include:

Follow instructor guide, installation guidance, and other training documentation in the classroom and field using lectures, guided discussions, hands‑on demonstrations, group exercises, scenarios, simulations, mock‑ups, videos, presentations, and other visual aids.

Deliver initial, refresher, and qualification training to Metra’s Mechanical or Engineering apprentice and journeyman workforce in compliance with department standards and procedures.

Administer written and practical exams and make performance observations to qualify and re‑qualify employees.

Update training documentation based on procedural, regulatory, and equipment changes, including delivery method, course guides, job and training aids, participant guides, and exams.

Analyze and evaluate course assets (guides, assessments, practice exercises, job/training aids, learner surveys) and provide recommendations to improve effectiveness.

Promote safe work practices and maintain a safe work environment, ensuring compliance with applicable safety rules and regulations.

Perform other related duties as assigned to meet ongoing organizational needs.

Qualifications • 8 years or more of required experience.

Final salary will depend on qualifications; offers up to the midpoint of the salary range for candidates meeting the experience threshold.
