Director of Engineering, Technology Merch Planning - Hybrid - Seattle
Nordstrom is looking for an experienced director to lead the strategy, technical engineering, software development, and application of our Merchandising technology stack. The role will focus on improving business profitability and inventory productivity through ML‑driven decision automation and integrated merchandising solutions.
Responsibilities
Oversee the development and implementation of merchandising technology solutions, including financial planning, assortment planning, selection, and procurement, to improve product margin and assortment productivity.
Partner with the executive team, senior business, engineering, UX, and data science leaders to establish a multi‑year technology roadmap aligned with organizational priorities.
Identify and evaluate solutions and vendor partners, building a pragmatic technology roadmap that anticipates complex challenges and opportunities.
Develop data‑driven recommendations for optimizing assortment, leveraging analytics and ML‑driven decision automation in partnership with data science.
Foster a problem‑solving culture that empowers leaders to resolve issues promptly, leveraging analytics and ML decision‑making.
Forecast long‑range talent and organizational structure needs to align engineering capabilities with enterprise strategy.
Champion the technology roadmap and functional strategy, creating a compelling vision that inspires teams and stakeholders.
Navigate organizational barriers to ensure strategic priorities are resourced and executed effectively.
Lead strategy and change management using strong business cases, ROI, and long‑term goals.
Build a high‑performing, diverse engineering team that collaborates effectively with data science.
Monitor industry trends to adjust the technology roadmap and incorporate emerging analytics tools.
Qualifications
10+ years of experience in merchandising, inventory, or supply chain engineering at a retail, technology, or e‑commerce company with a complex supply chain.
Experience implementing best‑in‑class third‑party merchandising solutions (e.g., O9, Toolio, SAP Retail, Anaplan, Oracle Retail Planning & Optimization).
5+ years of experience leading and developing engineering teams.
Proven ability to apply data science to solve real‑world inventory problems and to gain executive support.
Experience identifying network inefficiencies and developing insights for vendor partnership, service, cost, and sustainability.
Previous experience leading teams through change and running an outcome‑driven approach to roadmaps and stakeholder alignment.
Ability to define, measure, and analyze processes to identify improvement opportunities.
Effective communication in a variety of settings, including one‑on‑one, small and large groups, and across diverse styles.
Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in math, statistics, finance, economics, or a related quantitative discipline.
