TAMKO is seeking an Instrumentation and Controls Supervisor for the asphalt roofing manufacturing facility in Frederick, MD. The supervisor directs and coordinates activities of technicians engaged in troubleshooting, repair, maintenance, and installation of control devices, instrumentation, and electrical utility systems. The supervisor also manages automation technicians implementing improvements through PLC and HMI changes, hardware and distribution upgrades. The candidate selected will join our Engineering Department, working primarily Monday through Friday during day shifts, though flexibility for extended hours and on‑call duties is required.
Summary of Essential Job Functions
Identify and lead electrical and controls continuous improvement initiatives while managing direct reports in the execution of improvement projects.
Facilitate on‑time and orderly execution of controls projects through internal plant resources or centralized corporate teams and contracts.
Collaborate with plant supervisors to diagnose and resolve electrical and controls related issues impacting throughput and equipment uptime.
Assist in scheduling repair, maintenance, and installation of instrumentation devices and controls systems to ensure continuous production operations.
Offer expertise and knowledge to resolve complex electrical and controls problems and prevent reoccurrence by identifying gaps in training or procedures.
Help resolve logistical conflicts and develop solutions to overcome technical barriers in improvement projects executed by direct reports.
Direct maintenance activities and provide or arrange expert advice on main power infrastructure systems to the MCCs.
Develop and maintain preventive maintenance programs in conjunction with engineering and maintenance staff.
Review production, quality control, and maintenance reports and statistics to plan, adjust, and prioritize maintenance activities and identify opportunities for controls improvement.
Plan, develop, and implement new methods and procedures to improve operations, reduce costs, and increase the efficient utilization of labor and materials.
Direct, train, and supervise team members to enhance work performance and ensure adherence to company policies and procedures.
Track compliance with TAMKO’s electrical safety requirements and lead annual electrical safety training and compliance activities.
Approve and monitor timesheets, vacation schedule, and coordinate vacancy coverage.
Position Requirements
Five to ten years of manufacturing experience
High school diploma; Associate’s degree (A.A.) or equivalent from a two‑year college or technical school or five (5) years of related controls installation and troubleshooting experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience
Proficiency in PLC programming and motion control systems (Siemens preferred)
Experience with HMI programming (Aveva preferred)
Competence in 2D CAD electrical design software (AutoCAD preferred)
Familiarity with industrial electrical distribution systems, safe troubleshooting, and NEC requirements
Strong presentation and communication skills to effectively engage with plant management and personnel.
Occasional travel for technical skills training and other professional development opportunities.
Physical Requirements / Work Environment
While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to position himself/herself to operate, inspect, troubleshoot, repair, and/or maintain heavy plant equipment. This may require climbing stairs/ladders, bending, kneeling, crawling, squatting, and/or stooping. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and may occasionally lift or move heavier objects with assistance.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee may work around moving mechanical parts, at elevated heights, where dust and fumes could be present in the air, with or in proximity to chemicals, in hot environments, around electrical equipment, and in a loud environment. The employee must have the ability to understand and mitigate these and other risks, including by following all prescribed safety rules, and must have the ability to wear appropriate personal protective equipment, if necessary.
