Jones Day is seeking talented individuals to join our Intellectual Property (IP) patent prosecution group as Patent Agents in Biological Sciences, Electrical Engineering & Computer Science, Organic Chemistry, and Bioinformatics & Computational Biology.
A
Patent Agent
is a scientist or engineer with advanced technical training that has taken and passed the patent bar examination and is registered to practice before the USPTO. They draft, file, and prosecute patent applications on behalf of our clients and collaborate closely with inventors and attorneys to secure patent rights, translate complex technical concepts into legal claims, and correspond with the USPTO. They also work with attorneys in supporting IP due diligences, patent landscape analyses, patent litigations, and/or post‑grant proceedings. They play an important role in our prosecution teams and often handle client‑facing responsibilities.
Required Qualifications:
Ph.D. in the relevant discipline, or a related field (required). Highly qualified candidates with a M.S. and several years of industry research experience may be considered.
Must be registered to practice before the USPTO with a valid registration number and in good standing
(required).
Minimum of two (2) years of prior law firm or in‑house patent prosecution experience in science and technology is strongly preferred, but exceptional candidates transitioning from academia or research settings will be considered.
Boston Applicants:
It is unlawful in Massachusetts to require or administer a lie detector test as a condition of employment or continued employment. An employer who violates this law shall be subject to criminal penalties and civil liability.
Expected Salary Range (Boston, CA and NYC):
$150,000 - $250,000, depending on qualifications and experience.
