Classroom Support / Afterschool Teacher Position

Brooklyn Heights Montessori School (BHMS) is currently seeking to fill the following roles starting in November 2025.
Early Childhood Support + Lunch/Recess/Afterschool Teachers (Mornings as needed + noon-5pm daily)
Duties are as follows:
Supervise one early childhood or elementary classroom during lunch
Supervise one early childhood or elementary classroom on the playground during recess
Transition students between lunch and recess spaces
Support classroom teachers with care of the classroom
Care for outdoor spaces and recess equipment
Transition students to after-school enrichment classes
Facilitate games and safe play during after-school outdoor play
Facilitate games and activities during after-school indoor play
Maintain a rotation of engaging toys and activities for indoor play
Model, teach, and reinforce social skills and self-regulation skills
Required skills:
Ability to work with children age 3-12
Ability to manage group sizes up to 20
Ability to plan and execute group activities, games and play
Sense of humor and love of young children
Willingness to learn and use principles of Positive Discipline and Montessori philosophy
Ability to collaborate with a partner and within a team
Ability to clearly and promptly communicate by phone, email, and walkie‑talkie
Flexibility to accommodate changes in schedule or location of activities
Professionalism in presence, performance, and behavior
Bachelor's Degree preferred
3+ years of experience with Pre‑K through elementary age children
Knowledge or training in Montessori preferred
Must be eligible to work in the U.S.
This is a per diem position with compensation of $23/hour. Additional substitute teacher hours up to a total of 30 hours per week are available on an as‑needed basis. Please include a cover letter in your application that explains your professional background working with groups of children.
