Pay range: $134,746.00‑$185,693.00 per year.

Summary The Inpatient Rotational Clinical Pharmacist is responsible for all aspects of pharmacy care including clinical and operational duties mainly for inpatients but may also provide outpatient care. The incumbent primarily provides coverage within their assigned inpatient team and central inpatient pharmacy and may cross‑cover other inpatient pharmacy areas.

Basic Requirements

United States Citizenship: Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

English Language Proficiency: Pharmacists must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d)‑and 7407(d).

Education: Graduate of an ACPE‑accredited College or School of Pharmacy with a baccalaureate degree in pharmacy (BS Pharmacy) and/or a Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree.

Licensure: Full‑current and unrestricted license to practice pharmacy in any U.S. State, Territory, Commonwealth or District of Columbia.

Temporary appointment: Non‑licensed pharmacists who otherwise meet the eligibility requirements may be given a temporary appointment at the entry level as a Graduate Pharmacist under the authority of 38 U.S.C. 7405(c)(2)(B).

Revoked or surrendered licenses: Individuals who have licensed pharmacists on VA rolls with multiple licenses or revoked licenses for professional misconduct are not eligible for appointment unless the license is fully restored (38 U.S.C. 7402(f)).

Grandfathering Provision: All licensed pharmacists employed in VHA in this occupation on the effective date of this qualification standard are considered to have met all qualification requirements.

Licensure for GS‑11‑above: Candidates for GS‑11 and above must be licensed.

Duties

The incumbent is a licensed professional with knowledge and proficiency in pharmacy practice, including pharmaceutics, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and pharmacotherapeutics.

The incumbent is responsible for working with pharmacy department staff and the interdisciplinary team to ensure safe, effective, cost‑conscious, and patient‑centered drug therapy.

This includes clinical assessment of drug therapy based on patient‑specific factors, recommending appropriate alternatives to optimize medication use, and providing drug information and education to health care professionals, patients, and caregivers.

The clinical pharmacist abides by regulations and standards relating to distribution, control, and records for scheduled and non‑scheduled prescription and over‑the‑counter medications and medical supplies.

Indirect patient care activities include pharmacy benefits management, staff development, quality assurance, medication utilization review, and teaching/mentoring to incorporate students, interns, residents, and other trainees into patient care.

Functions of Position

Inpatient Clinical Pharmacy Program: Provide clinical pharmacy services, support pharmacoeconomic activities, and assess, monitor, manage, and document medication therapy for assigned patients.

Inpatient Pharmacy Operational Services: Involve in independent professional practice of pharmacy in accordance with VA policies and federal laws governing the practice of pharmacy.

Education: Assist in training of pharmacy employees, pharmacy residents and students, and develop appropriate rotations and learning opportunities.

Research: Follow research protocol criteria and study medication procedures.

Project Management: Participate in development and implementation of projects involving pharmacy residents and students.

Customer Service: Maintain courteous and cooperative relationships with a wide variety of organizational staff.

Work Schedule Full‑time, rotating shift between days and evenings, occasional overnights, assigned weekends and holidays.
