About the Role Northrop Grumman Defense Systems is seeking a Director of Design Engineering 2 for the Strategic Deterrent Systems (SDS) Division Engineering organization. The successful candidate will provide strategic oversight of two functional homeroom directorates, ensuring consistent engineering processes, tools, and training resources across the division. The role will be located in

Roy, UT; Huntsville, AL; Colorado Springs, CO; or Manhattan Beach, CA

and may offer a competitive relocation assistance package.

What You Will Do

Provide strategic oversight of two directorates, enabling design engineering execution across the SDS Division portfolio of programs while reporting to the Strategic Deterrent Systems Division’s Engineering Homeroom Vice President.

Direct the implementation of integrated design engineering processes across the SDS Division, driving consistency across program/product teams at all national and subcontractor locations.

Manage performance for direct‑reports and an organizational matrix of 500–1,500 staff.

Allocate and manage the directorate indirect budget for maximum program impact.

Create and deploy staff training campaigns, prioritizing program execution and staff technical/professional development.

Own technical compliance, enforce domain-related Principles and Operating Practices (PrOP), and continuously improve processes.

Oversee promotion, merit/bonus processes for subordinate technical staff, ensuring consistency with sector schedule and guidelines.

Serve as Delegation of Authority (DOA) to the FHR VP for program, division, and/or sector activities as directed.

Work Schedule This position’s standard work schedule is a 9/80: nine‑hour days Monday through Thursday with every other Friday off.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 10 years of related experience, or Master’s degree and 8 years of related experience.

Experience in a formal management/leadership position.

Extensive CAM/P&L experience.

3+ years of experience leading a technical and complex program effort.

Experience developing and administering budgets and defining performance standards.

Experience developing and implementing technologies associated with production processes for efficient and sustainable implementation.

U.S. citizenship with an active Secret Clearance (investigation and periodic review within the last 5 years) and ability to obtain program special access.

Nice‑to‑Have Qualifications

Master’s degree or higher in engineering or a related scientific discipline.

Experience establishing an organization and/or leading a major change initiative.

Active Top Secret clearance.

ICBM or complex aerospace systems experience.

Full‑lifecycle program execution experience.

Model‑Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) experience.

Design Engineering/Computer‑Aided Design (CAD) experience.

Prior experience interfacing with prime contractor site leads and USAF leadership personnel.

Experience leading the performance of tasks on schedule, at cost, and achieving all requirements as either project lead, integrated program team, or cost account manager.

Primary Level Salary Range: $184,600.00 – $320,500.00. The above range is a general guideline; Northrop Grumman considers factors such as scope, responsibilities, and candidate experience when determining base salary offers. Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, discretionary bonuses, and long‑term incentives.
