Job Description
The ideal candidate will possess extensive experience in battery electric vehicle/bus charging systems and electrical engineering designs using AutoCAD, scope and specification development, equipment troubleshooting and testing. The role requires medium and low voltage switchgears/switchboards, MCCs, starters, microprocessors, electro‑mechanical relays, transformers (dry & oil), UPS, batteries, AC/DC systems, automatic transfer switches, generators, lighting, lighting control systems, voltage regulators, cables, and related equipment. The position requires up to 50% field work throughout the DC, MD and VA area to WMATA facilities to witness testing of electrical equipment and traveling to manufacturer facilities throughout the US. It also requires evening and night work with little to no notice. The candidate will be responsible for reviewing WMATA design criteria, directives and standard drawings, consultant/contractor electrical designs and installations, and developing preventive maintenance inspection (PMI) procedures, coordinating field surveys and assessing existing power systems to support new design and installation efforts. The ideal candidate has extensive knowledge of NFPA 70, 70B, 130, IEEE, and ANSI/NETA ATS & MTS.
Minimum Qualifications
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in electrical/power engineering
Experience:
Minimum of seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in electrical/traction engineering, particularly in design and maintenance related functions.
Certification/Licensure:
Valid Driver’s License; RWP Certification Level 2, within six (6) months of hire and maintained for the duration of time in the job.
Preferred Qualifications
Specialized in electrical power engineering.
Registration as a Professional Engineer in at least one of the signatory jurisdictions (WMATA).
Compact (i.e., Maryland, Virginia, or the District of Columbia) is preferred.
Job Duties
Works with Authority electrical engineers, power maintenance contractors, and consultants to develop, review, and update electrical/traction power engineering standards.
Reviews project design drawings, specifications, and computations for electrical systems equipment such as switchgear, transformers, programmable logic control, grounding, lighting, panels, motors, pumps, fans, escalators, and cables.
Reviews project design drawings, specifications, and computations for traction power systems equipment such as AC/DC switchgear, transformers, rectifiers, panels, cathodic protection, heating systems, grounding system, and emergency trip stations.
Develops design and installation documents for bid and prepares accurate engineering reports on facilities and systems.
Initiates and manages design projects for electrical/traction power system installations in support of the WMATA rail and bus systems.
Develops new PMIs or updates existing PMIs for electrical/traction power equipment and reviews recommendations for tests and control procedures for prime electrical equipment.
Acts as primary point of contact within WMATA for matters pertaining to electrical/traction power systems.
Supports coordination efforts for the development of utility electrical service for the provision of electrical service for new rail operations and for updating existing systems.

Summary The Senior Electrical Engineer serves as the electrical/power systems engineer and is responsible for designing and overseeing the review and coordination of all electrical designs, plans and specifications required for WMATA’s rapid rail and bus transit system.
