The Security Monitor is responsible for monitoring, answering, and coordinating critical MBTA security alarm situations and security system issues spanning the rail, bus, commuter rail, and other transportation modes and services. This position is based at 45 High Street, although intermittently security and public safety circumstances may require working from 10 Park Plaza or other locations in the Boston area as directed.

Serve as 24/7 on-site departmental liaison at the MBTA Operations building for issues pertaining to facility security and preparedness.

Acknowledges, reviews, and initiates response to system generated alarms using available information such as video, logs, and on-scene personnel.

Provides first line technical and application support to MBTA video workstation users. Coordinates alarm and incident response with MBTA Transit Police, MBTA Operations, MBTA Engineering & Maintenance, and other transportation and public safety agencies and departments.

Proactively monitors MBTA and MBTA Transit Police public safety radio channels to identify incidents requiring video or other security support.

Receives MBTA and other incident reports, classifies them by severity and type, and generates notifications to affected stakeholders.

Identifies patterns, trends, issues, gaps, and other issues requiring escalation and follow‑up by management or other parties.

Performs reviews of MBTA employee and MBTA contractor alarm and access logs to identify security violations, system issues, and other discrepancies requiring resolution.

Conducts quarterly or more frequent audit of all MBTA security cameras to ensure proper functionality, including connectivity, picture quality, orientation, and more; generates report with full results and follows up with other staff and maintenance contractor to ensure issues are addressed.

Monitors, diagnoses, reports on, and issues maintenance work orders regarding the operational status of MBTA security system devices, such as cameras, access controls, tunnel intrusion alarms, emergency callboxes, and platform train monitors.

Performs regular audits and constant video monitoring of operational status of MBTA systems including vehicle facility gates.

Assists with MBTA security‑related investigations, which may include the review of video, alarms, and access logs, reports, and other information and resources.

Coordinates with, assists with oversight of, and provides operational direction to MBTA security guards at 45 High Street, 10 Park Plaza, and elsewhere.

Makes recommendations regarding MBTA security monitoring SOPs to identify process improvements.

Understands and follows all MBTA and departmental standard operating procedures and policies relating to security incident response, notifications, and safety.

Provides real time access to MBTA facility doors and vehicle gates for employees, contractors, and public safety personnel during emergencies or as directed.

Supports partner agencies, including Keolis, Boston Harbor Cruises, MassDOT, and others via similar activities and duties as needed and directed.

Performs other duties of a similar nature as assigned by Security Supervisor, Deputy Director of Security Operations, Director of Security and Emergency Management, or other S&EM management.

Shifts may vary, potentially requiring the selected candidate to work nights, holidays and weekends.

This position supports a 24/7 security monitoring operation, and the individual in this position must be able and willing to work any shifts assigned, whether routinely or by exception including but not limited to: severe weather conditions, special events, public safety incidents, emergencies or any other circumstances that may potentially impact the MBTA or its partner agencies.

Have the ability and willingness to work from alternate locations as directed.

Perform related duties and projects as assigned.

Bachelors Degree from an accredited institution.

Two (2) years of experience working in a coordination, dispatch, control, operations center or equivalent applicable experience required.

Experience operating in an environment where security is critical to operations and safety.

Experience operating a computer and utilizing and multi‑tasking between various applications.

Experience working in the field of security with security‑related systems, devices, networks.

Experience using video surveillance, access control, and alarm intrusion software and systems.

Experience listening to and using public safety radio systems.

Sound judgment and ability to prioritize and multi‑task under stressful conditions.

Excellent customer service, teamwork, and interpersonal skills.

A High School Diploma or GED with an additional two (2) years of directly related experience substitutes for the Bachelor’s degree requirement.

An Associate’s degree from an accredited institution, and an additional one (1) year of directly related experience, substitutes for the Bachelor’s degree requirement

A Master’s degree in a related subject substitutes for two (2) years of general experience.

A nationally recognized certification or statewide/professional certification in a related field substitutes for one year of experience.

Preferred Experience and Skills

Experience working with transit modes and in a transit environment preferred.

Experience with physical security and project management applications such as Genetec, Stentofon, Lenel, Smartsheet, BOX, and Microsoft Office strongly preferred.
