Job Description
Are you adept at motivating coaches to achieve championship‑quality teams? If so, Shaw University wants you! Shaw University is seeking its next Athletics Director. Reporting to the Office of the President, the Athletic Director will provide visionary leadership, strategic planning, and policy development for the athletics program; maintain a program aligned with the university’s mission and strategic priorities; work with Institutional Advancement to raise funds; administer the overall athletic budget; recruit and manage coaching staff; and ensure compliance with all university, national association, and conference policies, rules, and regulations. Frequent nights, weekend work, and in‑season travel are required.
Essential Job Functions
Selects and retains qualified personnel to ensure quality customer satisfaction through ongoing support, training, supervision, coaching, and performance review.
Administers and directly oversees the financial operations of the athletic department, formulates budget guidelines, approves appropriations, and monitors compliance with the approved budget.
Coordinating with Institutional Advancement, is responsible for developing a comprehensive fundraising plan that incorporates operational and capital initiatives; implements strategies for promoting giving and maintaining a prospect list.
Assists the Faculty Athletic Representative in investigating potential violations and consulting on rule interpretation.
Serves as the primary spokesperson for the department, promoting the athletics program to faculty, staff, students, alumni, media, and the public.
Provides supervision and control over marketing and promotions functions.
Approves requests for athletic scholarship awards.
Coordinates activities and communication within the CIAA conference and NCAA.
Helps coaches arrange schedules, approves schedules, and presents them to the Events Committee for publicity and coordination.
Oversees the design of an organizational structure that achieves the department’s goals and objectives.
Works with the University’s Title IX officer and Associate Director of Athletics for Compliance to ensure Title IX guidelines are met.
Assists or advises coaches with sport‑specific implementation problems.
Maintains good public relations with prospective student‑athletes, parents, spectators, media, donors, and the community.
Establishes policies for operational procedures with the leadership team.
Supervises grant‑in‑aid distribution for all sports and manages renewal processes.
Attends national, regional and conference meetings as the spokesperson for the athletic program.
Supervisory Responsibilities Directly supervises employees, including the Associate Athletic Director for Compliance/SWA and all active coaching staff; carries out supervisory responsibilities by following organizational policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; and addressing complaints and resolving problems.
Minimum Job Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution required; Master’s preferred.
Ten years of demonstrated extensive and successful experience in athletics, higher education administration, and management.
Five years of successful supervisory/management experience, preferably in higher education.
Demonstrated experience in accreditation standards in higher education.
Demonstrated fundraising and development experience for both operational and capital needs.
Budget management experience.
Visionary and forward‑thinking problem‑solving skills.
High business and personal ethical standards.
Calm, thoughtful under pressure.
Legally operates an automobile in the State of North Carolina.

Vision, commitment, and experience in achieving goals and pursuing excellence are critical. Strong oral and written presentation skills; excellent organizational skills; ability to work independently and as a member of a team; ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously; valid driver’s license with a clean Motor Vehicle Records check; reading, writing, and speaking fluently in English.
Physical Demands Ability to sit or stand for up to 8 hours per day; some lifting (up to 25 pounds occasionally), bending, and carrying; regularly required to talk, hear, and use hands and fingers to handle or feel.
