Overview The Tulare County Health & Human Services Agency (HHSA) is recruiting a Veterinarian to perform high-volume, high-quality spay/neuter surgeries, oversee perioperative care, diagnose and treat medical conditions of shelter animals, provide vaccinations, administer emergency treatment to impounded animals, review animal bite reports for rabies control, assist in animal cruelty investigations, and maintain the Veterinary Premises Permit and DEA license.
Responsibilities
Perform surgeries, including physical examinations, anesthesia, and post-operative care following SOPs.
Diagnose and treat diseases, illnesses, and injuries of shelter animals.
Provide emergency care and manage post-surgical complications.
Administer vaccinations and maintain medical records.
Review animal bite reports and coordinate rabies control efforts.
Assist criminal investigations related to animal cruelty.
Maintain the Veterinary Premises Permit and DEA license.
Utilize shelter’s custom animal software for record keeping.
Attend staff meetings and provide veterinary input for shelter operations.
Pursue continuing education and maintain licensure and certification requirements.
Minimum Qualifications
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) from an accredited veterinary school.
Current California Veterinarian License, unrestricted and active.
National Accreditation Number from the USDA.
DEA license for the procurement and use of controlled substances within 30 days of hire.
Valid California driver’s license.
Immunization against rabies within 3 months of start date, maintained for the duration of employment.
High-volume spay/neuter surgical experience.
Knowledge of rabies control laws, veterinary forensics, animal cruelty laws, and shelter population medicine.
Experience with USDA regulations regarding health certificates and transport of animals.
Skill in supervising shelter staff related to veterinary care or surgery.
Strong communication and organizational skills; ability to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends.
Capacity to perform high-volume surgeries in a fast-paced environment.
Desired Experience
Two (2) years of veterinary medical experience, including at least one (1) year of spay/neuter surgery.
Additional Requirements
Proficiency with contemporary office equipment and animal software.
Ability to maintain confidential client and patient records.
Preparedness to travel within and outside Tulare County using County vehicle.
Physical ability to restrain live animals and handle equipment for both small and large species.
