Metal Building Fabrication Shop Manager with Fitting Skills American Western Steel is a leading provider of high-quality metal buildings and structural components. Overview We are seeking an experienced Shop Manager who combines strong leadership with hands‑on fabrication and fitting expertise. The ideal candidate will oversee daily shop operations, manage fabrication and fitting processes, ensure safety and quality standards, and drive efficiency from material intake to final assembly. Attention to detail, excellent communication, and a proactive approach to problem‑solving are essential.

Key Responsibilities

Lead and supervise shop personnel, including welders, fitters, machine operators, and helpers.

Plan, schedule, and coordinate fabrication and fitting activities to meet project timelines and budget.

Oversee cutting, welding, bending, drilling, torquing, and assembly of metal building components (e.g., columns, beams, purlins, girts, bracing, track systems).

Perform and supervise field and shop fittings to ensure proper alignment and fit‑up of structural components.

Manage fixture and jig setup, inspection gauges, and quality control checks to maintain dimensional accuracy.

Implement and enforce safety programs, OSHA compliance, lockout/tagout, PPE usage, and housekeeping standards.

Optimize shop layout, material flow, and equipment utilization (printers, CNC cutting, plasma, welders, bending rolls, drills, torches, and fastener stations).

Manage material procurement, inventory control, and subcontractor coordination when needed.

Develop and monitor KPIs: productivity, scrap rate, waste, downtime, weld quality, and on‑time delivery.

Participate in project planning meetings, provide fabrication estimates, and assist with RFIs and change orders.

Mentor and train staff on welding/fitting procedures, safety, and quality standards.

Maintain documentation: work orders, day sheets, inspection records, welding procedure specifications (WPS), material test reports (MTRs), and QMS records.

Requirements

Education & Experience

High school diploma or equivalent; technical/community college certificate or associate degree in welding technology, fabrication, metalworking, or related field preferred.

5+ years of hands‑on fabrication experience in metal buildings or structural steel, including welding and fitting.

2+ years of supervisory or management experience in a fabrication shop.

Strong understanding of welding codes and standards (e.g., AWS D1.1/D1.3, ASME if applicable).

Proficient in interpretation of blueprints, schematics, weld maps, and fabrication drawings.

Proven ability to fit and align structural components in a shop and field setting.

Proficient in welding processes (e.g., MIG/TIG/Flux‑Cored) and destructive/non‑destructive testing basics.

Familiar with fabrication equipment: saws, shear/bending machines, plasma/laser, drilling, tapping, torquing tools, grinders, and welding machines.

Strong leadership, communication, and team‑building skills.

Excellent problem‑solving, time management, and organizational abilities.

Knowledge of safety regulations and best practices; CPR/First Aid and OSHA 10/30 certification a plus.

Physical Requirements

Ability to lift heavy objects (up to 50 lbs or more with assistance as needed).

Ability to stand, bend, twist, and walk for extended periods.

Capability to operate shop equipment and perform welding/fitting tasks as required.
