Post holders are expected to be flexible and be prepared to carry out any similar or related duties which do not fall within the work outlined. The Line Manager, in consultation with the post holder will undertake any review. The NHS Knowledge and Skills Framework (the NHS KSF) defines and describes the knowledge and skills which NHS staff need to apply in their work in order to deliver quality services. Main duties of the job The post will be based in the Bridge Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) which is currently housed on the second floor of the Central Health Clinic, Tower Hill, Bristol.

The post holder will undergo a period of in depth training tailored to their needs and will be well supervised throughout this to provide “acute” examination of post pubertal children and adults who may have been subject to or who report sexual abuse, rape and sexual assault. Examinations will be supported by a crisis worker.

Where appropriate a joint examination with another doctor (e.g. paediatrician) will be performed. The medical examinations will be undertaken at The Bridge SARC Centre of Excellence, Bristol; however, there may be times when the post-holder is required to attend other sites to perform medical examinations, for example, local hospitals in the wider area (Gloucestershire/Wiltshire/Avon and Somerset).

The post-holder will provide “on-call” services out of hours as part of an on-call rota during which they will attend “acute” medical examinations as required and will also be expected to offer advice, triage and support the forensic nurse examiners.

Whilst providing services, the post-holder will also provide telephone support and advice to professionals from partner agencies including police, social care and other healthcare professionals. This will include participating in strategy meetings/discussions, making referrals and attending multi agency discussions where appropriate.

Job responsibilities The post holder will attend both civil and criminal courts as required to assist the court as a professional witness. The post-holder will continue to be available to attend court beyond the end of their employment with the service.

The post-holder will be expected to attend and contribute to educational/peer review meetings (minimum of 4 per year) and will be supported to attend external courses and educational opportunities in the field of forensic sexual offences medicine and obtain additional qualifications in the field such as MFFLM (SOE), LFFLM (SOE). They will be expected to complete appraisal and CPD activities in accordance with the GMC. The post holder will be expected to provide a DNA sample for elimination purposes as part of their role.

Knowledge and Experience

Minimum 4 years post graduate experience in relevant specialty e.g gynaecology, Obstetrics, general practice, Emergency medicine

Knowledge of and compliance with child and adult safeguarding procedures

Experience in the management of people who have experienced maltreatment including for example child abuse, domestic abuse, honour based violence

Prior experience in the management of children, adults or young people who have been sexually assaulted

Experience in any of the following areas: Gynaecology, Genito-Urinary medicine Reproductive & Sexual Health/contraceptive provision, clinical Forensic Medicine, A&E, psychiatry, paediatrics, general practice

Previous involvement with Strategy discussions/ meetings, multi-agency discussions

Previous Court attendances as a professional witness

Skills and Abilities

Meets professional health requirements

Willingness to travel to and work at other sites necessitated by the role

Familiarity with information technology and general computer skills

Teaching skills course/ formal teaching qualification

Experience of undergraduate and post-graduate teaching

Car plus license to drive

Qualifications and Training

Registerable medical qualification (MBChB or equivalent)

Level 3 safeguarding training

MRCP or MRCPCH/FRCPCH, or MFSRH/FFSRH, or MRCOG/FRCOG or MRCGP/FRCGP or another appropriate Royal College or Faculty of forensic Medicine membership or part thereof

Other relevant qualification (e.g. BSc or DFSRH)

Additional and Aptitudes

Full registration with the GMC with a license to practice

Medical Indemnity (MPS/MDU/MDDUS)

Understanding of Clinical Governance and the individual responsibilities it implies

Positive approach to evidence based practice and evidence of this

Awareness of personal limitations and the importance of self-care

Good clinical practise accreditation

Publication of relevant review articles or case reports or peer reviewed research papers
