Position Code: 27-NE0918-1
Description Work as part of a collaborative, multidiscipline team in support of U.S. Government and provide technical subject matter expertise in the field of network engineering and communications modeling.
Provides support in the translation of business requirements into telecommunications (eg. LAN, MAN, WAN, Voice and Video) requirements, designs and orders. Understands how the overarching INFOSEC and COMSEC security requirements for the Customer network add to the complexity of this position.
Performs a full range of complex network designs encompassing multiple technologies and technology layers (LAN, WAN, OS, IOS, etc.) within a single, enterprise network. Evaluates new network technologies and makes recommendations to project managers regarding the integration of these technologies into the existing network infrastructure. Plans new designs and configurations for integration into the enterprise network, using knowledge of the performance characteristics and network interconnect points to ensure effective integration and optimal network performance.
Provides engineering and design support for the creation and deployment of communication systems. Research existing technologies and apply COTS/GOTS systems to develop network infrastructure for voice and data systems, using best practice security methodologies. Integrate system design with network architecture to best meet customer requirements.
Perform post design support to include installation, configuration, and tier III/IV, O&M support for both enterprise and field deployed systems including local area network (LAN), wide area network (WAN), and system level aspects. Creates simulated networks to test applications over low bandwidth links, troubleshoots network connectivity issues, and install/configure wide area link utilizing radio frequency (RF) communications (i.e. over, cell, and microwave). Configure/test/maintain network infrastructure that connects to enterprise architecture. Needs to have knowledge of network intrusion detection.
Mandatory Skills
Design and optimize network topologies and site configurations. Plan installations, transitions, and cutovers of network components and capabilities.
Organize and direct network installations or site surveys.
Assess and document current site network configuration and user requirements.
Evaluate and recommend COTS applications and methodologies that can be acquired to provide interoperable, portable, and scalable information technology solutions.
Ability to convey technical designs, ideas and results to non-technical audiences and provide briefings to high-level government personnel.
Must have knowledge of Cisco Routing and Switching, and network architecture planning.
Must have knowledge of remote administration and secure Virtual Private Networking, to include IPSEC and SSL.
Must understand commercial encryption standards and their application in IP networking.
An understanding of Private Branch Exchange telephony, to include Avaya/Nortel telephone switch interfaces
An understanding of RF transport mediums to include cellular, microwave, and satellite communications.
An understanding of wired data transport mediums to include Category 5e/6 and fiber optics.
Ability to design small to medium scale voice, video, and data networks. Familiarity and experience with various encryption devices and industry standard commercial encryption methods.
Knowledge of WAN technologies to include ISDN, POTS, and Satellite voice and data circuits and terminal device configuration.
Understanding and experience applying RF communications systems to include HF/VHF/UHF, microwave, and VSAT systems.
Thorough understanding and experience with application of routing protocols (particularly TCP/IP) and the configuration and use of networking devices such as routers, switches, and firewalls.
Familiarity with wireless standards such as GSM, CDMA, 802.11 and 802.16 technologies.
Experience with common test and analysis equipment to include spectrum analyzers, network sniffers, LAN/WAN simulation equipment, and COTS software.
Possession of excellent oral and written communications skills.
Optional Skills
Certifications such as CCIE and MCSE
Knowledge of Microsoft Server administration and service oriented system design.
Knowledge of VMWare ESX Server and virtual system architecture, to utilize Storage Area Network (SAN) technology.
