About Basyl Lab Basyl Lab is an Artificial Cognition (ACo) research and product company. We believe cognition and intelligence must remain fundamentally distinct in artificial systems, just as they are in biological systems. This distinction necessitates a split in the evolution of artificial systems. Our mission is to redefine the building blocks of artificial systems by putting ACo at its core, creating a safer, more sustainable foundation for next-generation AI.

We are operating at a pivotal moment—similar to the foundational stage of OpenAI’s research in 2015, but for the emerging field of ACo. We are looking for an audacious technical co-founder committed to working together to build artificial cognition in code and accelerate the benefits of AI.

About the Role We are seeking a co-founding Chief Technology Officer (CTO). You will be a deeply technical leader, driving the translation of cognitive science into entirely new, high-performance software and systems. This CTO role requires a unique combination of research and engineering, as the ideal candidate has a deep academic or professional background in Cognitive Science, Neuroscience, Psychology, or related fields and possesses a keen understanding of the essential distinctions between cognition and intelligence. You will be responsible for defining the technical roadmap and architecture that will defend our assertion in code, creating the first mainstream toolkits and models for ACo.

What You Will Do

Architect, build, and defend the core technical frameworks and models for Artificial Cognition. This includes translating principles of advanced cognition into deployable, scalable code and systems.

Serve as Basyl Lab’s technical authority, co-owning the direction for all ACo research and product development.

Ensure our approach delivers on the promise of more efficient, trustworthy, and human-aligned artificial systems.

Bridge the theoretical with practical machine learning implementation.

Attract and lead a world-class team of research scientists and engineers to accelerate collective understanding and building of ACo.

Represent Basyl Lab’s technical vision to stakeholders alongside CEO.

We Encourage You to Apply If You

Have a background in machine learning, AI, cognitive science, psychology, neuroscience, or a related field

Are energized by first-principles thinking, paradigm-building, and rigorous experimentation

Believe scale and power do not equal value and longevity

Desire to build something foundational

Operate with integrity, curiosity, ambition, and pace

Have a bias toward action and movement, because we’re growing and moving fast

Have excellent communication skills to collaborate with engineering and non-engineering teams and articulate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders

Proven ability to conduct and apply research in machine learning and related domains

Or, you can compellingly demonstrate that you are the right candidate even without a traditional background, through unique depth in this problem space

Strong Candidates Will

Understand the distinction between cognition and intelligence at a mechanistic, theoretical, and philosophical level

Have experience scaling engineering infrastructure

Have worked on open-ended, exploratory research agendas aimed at foundational insights

Possess an advanced degree (PhD preferred) in a relevant scientific or technical field

Be able to demonstrate experience in at least one of the following: human or basal cognition, embodied systems, cognitive modeling, computational and dynamic systems approaches to cognition

Compensation This is initially a split

equity-based role , reflecting the substantial commitment and impact required to initiate a new branch of artificial systems. However, the compensation package, including a competitive base salary and benefits, will commence upon the closing of our initial funding round.

Additionally, this role is currently remote, with the expectation to transition to a hybrid model in the SF Bay Area upon the closing of this round.

Why Basyl Lab Modern AI systems are fundamentally incapable of advanced, real-world cognition. Yet they are deployed in critical systems, marketed as capable beyond humans, and entrusted with decisions beyond their design. This disconnect poses ethical, social, and environmental dangers that compound as adoption accelerates. That’s why we see ACo as a both a technical frontier and a moral imperative.
