CITY OF ELIZABETH CITY
Performs intermediate protective service work involving a variety of general police assignments. Much of the work is performed under emergency conditions and frequently involves considerable personal hazard. Work is performed under the regular supervision of a police supervisor.
Responsibilities include:
Enforcing laws; investigating criminal activity; ensuring the safety of the public; testifying in court; maintaining records and files; preparing reports. Operating a patrol vehicle or walking to observe violations of traffic laws, suspicious activities or persons, and disturbances of law and order during assigned shifts. Enforcing traffic laws and issuing citations for violations. Responding to calls for assistance, complaints, and disruptive behavior, and evaluating situations. Serving legal documents, making arrests, maintaining records, and testifying in court. Measuring speed and conducting breath analysis on suspects. Filling out arrest records and taking fingerprints. Performing prisoner security functions. Providing escort services for funerals and businesses. Preparing detailed reports on activities and assignments. Participating in in-service training programs. Performing related tasks as required. Qualifications include: Graduation from high school or GED equivalent. General knowledge of police methods, practices, procedures, pertinent laws, and ordinances. Thorough knowledge of city geography and important buildings. Knowledge of department rules and regulations. Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions and prepare clear reports. Ability to deal courteously, firmly, and tactfully with the public. Ability to analyze situations and act quickly and effectively. Physical agility and endurance. Skill in firearm use and vehicle operation. Ability to establish effective working relationships. Note: The F-3 and Authorization release form are required for sworn police positions.
