Senior Appraiser

to join our committed team of professionals. This position offers an excellent opportunity for a skilled appraiser who is dedicated to property valuation, committed to public service, and motivated to embrace a leadership role.

As a Senior Appraiser, you will perform comprehensive property appraisals for tax assessment purposes, provide technical mentorship to appraisal staff, and support the Assistant Assessor and Assessor in ensuring fair and objective property assessments across Nevada County. You will play a key role in maintaining the integrity of the property tax roll while mentoring staff and strengthening the professional development of the appraisal team.

Key Responsibilities

Carry out in-depth assessments of physical and real and personal property for taxation purposes following state and local guidelines.

Analyze real estate data, deeds, and market trends to produce accurate property assessments.

Organize, direct and evaluate the work of fellow appraisers and provide technical guidance, along with training, and mentoring.

Assist in developing appraisal procedures, workflows, and quality control measures.

Prepare reports, correspondence, and presentations as needed.

Represent the Assessor’s Department in interactions with the Assessment Appeals Board and connect with property owners and the public.

They communicate complex information clearly and professionally, both in writing and verbally. Above all, they are motivated to learn, share knowledge, and cultivate a culture of excellence within a high-performing team.

A Senior Appraiser is an integral part of Nevada County whose mission is to develop and report an opinion of value on a specific type of property! This position is crafted for individuals who have a Bachelors’ degree from an accredited college or university. Major coursework in accounting, business administration, economics, or a closely related field is preferred.

A qualified applicant must exhibit 2 years of appraisal experience that aligns with the specifications for Appraiser II or III at Nevada County. Also required is the possession of a valid certificate as an Appraiser issued by the California State Board of Equalization.

Within one year of appointment, Incumbents will be expected to obtain an Advanced Appraiser certificate issued by the State Board of Equalization. If you have knowledge of principles contained in the State Constitution, Revenue and Taxation Code, and Assessor's Handbook, that's a plus!
