Overview In accordance with education‑based athletics, assistant coaches work with Head Coaches to develop an effective coaching program plan including skill development, practice planning, and supervision of all levels. They focus on individual and team growth while instilling character, and communicate effectively with Head Coach, student‑athletes, parents, and administration.
Education and Work Experience
Teachers or certificated professional educators employed by the local Board of Education.
Persons certifiable as professional educators by the State Department of Education according to 13A.12.01.
Credentialed coaches meeting the following requirements:
Eligible to hold a Maryland certificate under COMAR 13A.12.01.
Possess a MPSSAA/MSDE Coaching Certification.
Completed two years of successful coaching as an emergency coach.
Spent the previous one year as a successful emergency coach at the school of hire in the position of hire.
Essential Job Functions
Be knowledgeable of the contents of the Charles County Public Schools Extra‑Curricular Handbook and enforce all policies.
Assist head coach/sponsor with pre‑season meeting.
Report directly to head coach/sponsor.
Set an example of good moral and physical behavior.
Make recommendations for improvements and new equipment.
Arrive 30 minutes before announced practice time on non‑school days.
Secure building during practice and after each practice/game.
Help keep coach's office clean.
Inform players of responsibilities, enforce all rules set by school, county, and state.
Teach fundamentals and promote sportsmanship.
Check for damaged property and equipment; report immediately.
Ensure all players meet eligibility requirements of MPSSAA and the Charles County Board of Education.
Provide required certifications to athletic director/principal.
Supervise every minute of every practice/activity.
Assume responsibility for conduct and well‑being of every player/student on trips.
Delegate duties to student managers but retain responsibility for their action.
Help conduct yourself and the team to render credit to school and community.
Attend all varsity games; assist or scout for varsity.
Collect and check in all equipment; inventory as required.
Maintain equipment lists, storage, repair status.
Collect cost of lost equipment from players; remit to athletic director/Head Coach.
Assist recording of players who qualify for letter awards and special honors.
Attend coaches' meetings, clinics, etc.
Track school records for each sport.
Help assist head coach with budget request for next season.
Environmental Factors & Physical Requirements Requires ordinary ambulatory skills, ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and manipulate light to medium weights (10‑50 lb). Good hand‑eye coordination, visual acuity, and the ability to use a keyboard. Frequent sitting, reaching, talking, and hearing.
