The Turlock Police Department is offering incentives for Police Officer I and Police Officer II positions. The extended instructors will receive a total incentive ranging from $6,000-$10,000 for Police Officer I and $15,000-$20,000 for a lateral Police Officer.
Incentive Breakdown
Police Officer I (Academy Trainee/Graduate) $3,000 at swearing‑in date.
$3,000 upon completion of 3 years of service from swearing‑in date.
Veteran (honorably discharged) – Additional $4,000
($7,000 total) upon completion of 3 years of service.
Lateral Police Officer (PO II)
– Incentive ranging from $15,000-$20,000 $5,000 upon swearing‑in date.
$5,000 upon completion of probation.
$5,000 upon completion of 3 years of service.
Veteran (honorably discharged) – Additional $5,000

ANNUAL BASE SALARY RANGE
POLICE OFFICER I: $6,187.00 - $7,520.00
POLICE OFFICER II: $7,163.00 - $8,705.00
The position of Police Officer I/II is assigned to perform law enforcement and crime prevention work; enforce State and local traffic regulations, conduct comprehensive criminal investigations on special assignments, and perform related duties as assigned. This designation is governed by the T.A.P.O. bargaining unit and is subject to additional overtime, standby, call‑back and shift assignments.
Essential Functions Operations
Patrol assigned areas in vehicles, on foot, motorcycle or bicycle.
Analyze and solve community/neighborhood problems involving the protection and preservation of life, property, and enforcement of City, County and State laws.
Conduct investigations of disturbances, prowlers, burglaries, thefts, robberies, juvenile crimes, domestic violence, sexual assaults, vehicle accidents, and deaths.
Direct traffic and regulate traffic flow during emergencies or congestion.
Work shift schedules: Days, Swings, Graveyard.
Testify in court as needed.
Provide traffic enforcement, including arrests and issuance of citations.
Respond to and provide assistance from other law enforcement agencies in emergencies.
Collect and store evidence for court presentation.
Prepare detailed reports of arrests, investigations, and illegal incidents.
Proactively patrol business districts and residential neighborhoods at all times of day and night.
Provide direction and information to the public.
Process and care for prisoners.
Establish and maintain positive contact with citizens regarding potential community problems, suspicious people, and circumstances.
Assist with Neighborhood Watch and Business Watch meetings.
Counsel at‑risk youth and assist with diversion programs and press relations.
Serve as School Resource Officer as assigned.
Assist with licensing, building maintenance, permit issuance, or other assignments.
Work with a team of officers in a specialized street crime suppression unit (C‑Team).
Participate in community recreation activities.
Investigations
Investigate, collect, and preserve evidence from crime scenes and accident sites.
Interview and interrogate witnesses, victims, and suspects.
Locate suspects, make arrests, and seize criminal evidence.
Prepare detailed investigation reports and testimonies for court.
Interview merchants and the public to obtain suspect descriptions and statements.
Serve as an undercover agent for vice and narcotic investigations.
Conduct background investigations on officer or civilian applicants.
Cooperate with other agencies on assigned investigative duties.
Consult with supervisor on case progress and problems.
Work with the Turlock drug enforcement team or other task forces, including:
Stanislaus County Drug Enforcement Unit
Stanislaus County Gang Intelligence Task Force
Sacramento Valley Hi‑Tech Crimes Task Force
Stanislaus County Auto Theft Task Force

Minimum Qualifications
Age:
21 years at the time of appointment. Proof: copy of U.S. issued birth certificate or accepted proof of citizenship.
Citizenship:
United States citizen or eligible permanent resident alien. Proof: U.S. birth certificate or naturalization document.
Education:
High school graduate (public, accredited military, or approved private) or equivalent GED/Proficiency Exam. Two‑year, four‑year, or advanced college degree desirable.
Driver’s License:
Valid California Class C license; proof: copy of license.
Police Academy:
Graduate or currently enrolled in a California POST‑certified police academy; must graduate before appointment; proof: academy certificate or enrollment confirmation.
Certificates:
Obtain POST Basic Certificate within 18 months of appointment; advanced first‑aid certificate within 6 months.
Physical Requirements Maintain physical ability to meet police and safety standards including visual acuity, hearing, mobility, endurance, and ability to lift and operate equipment in emergency conditions.
Selection Process
Complete and submit a standard Application for Employment, supplemental questionnaire, and proof of academy requirements.
Applications are screened; incomplete applications are rejected.
Successful candidates compete in a written exam; those who pass advance to an oral exam.
Physical performance test may be required; successful candidates continue.
Top candidates receive a command staff interview and may be referred for a background investigation.
Final appointment contingent upon: background investigation, Chief of Police interview, medical examination (including drug screening), and psychological examination.
