Job Summary
Intermittent Interpreters provide simultaneous and consecutive interpreting services during court proceedings where parties and witnesses testify, or when attorneys present oral arguments and motions. Intermittent Interpreters may also assist court staff with interpreting in a customer service setting, and may provide sight translations as needed. Intermittent Interpreters work in a courtroom or office setting and have significant contact with judges, court staff, attorneys, and the public.
Responsibilities
Provide simultaneous and consecutive interpreting services during court proceedings.
Assist court staff with interpreting in a customer service setting and provide sight translations as needed.
Work in courtroom or office settings while interacting regularly with judges, court staff, attorneys, and the public.
Be scheduled on an as-needed basis with no set work schedule and without limits on the amount of work accepted or rejected within a calendar year.
May be assigned to any court location based on daily needs.
Maintain confidentiality and remain neutral and unbiased in all interpreting services.
Schedule & Availability Intermittent Interpreters are court employees scheduled on an as‑needed basis with no set work schedule. They may accept or reject assignments throughout the year and are eligible for Social Security and Workers' Compensation coverage.
Compensation Paid $47.20 per hour with a four‑hour minimum guarantee of paid time (provided the interpreter agrees to be available for the full half‑day session). Additional hours beyond the four‑hour guaranteed minimum are paid hourly.
Minimum Qualifications
Valid and current certification as a "Certified Court Interpreter" in Spanish issued by the Judicial Council of California.
Applicants lacking the Judicial Council interpreter certification will not be considered.
Proof of certification must be submitted via the online application in PDF or JPEG format, or mailed/hand‑delivered to Human Resources.
