The
Seasonal Landscape Maintenance Preprofessional
positions landscape maintenance efforts by operating equipment and performing hands-on work that enhances the appearance and health of assigned outdoor areas. This role contributes to the overall upkeep of facilities, grounds, and plantings alongside the Landscape crew.
What You'll Do
Safely operate and maintain landscaping tools and equipment such as mowers, trimmers, and other power and hand tools.
Perform routine grounds maintenance including mowing, trimming, weeding, litter removal, edging, firewood splitting, and pruning/shaping shrubs.
Assist with turf restoration to maintain healthy and attractive lawns.
Help remove invasive plants and conduct targeted weeding.
Install soil, compost, and wood chips in designated beds, tree rings, and around signage.
Support plant bed care including irrigation, soil amendment, and planting annuals, perennials, bulbs, and shrubs.
Assist volunteers during garden and special events, including setup and takedown.
Follow all safety policies and help maintain a clean, orderly, and hazard-free work environment.
Provide excellent teamwork and customer service while supporting daily operations.
Perform other duties as needed to support landscape maintenance activities.
What You'll Need
18 years of age or older at time of hire.
Valid Driver's License in good standing.
1 year of grounds maintenance experience in landscape maintenance and turf management, including the operation of lawnmowers and trimmers is required.
Proficiency in the identification of native and invasive flora.
Knowledge of basic horticulture practices.
Familiarity with common grounds maintenance equipment, including mowers, trimmers, edgers and blowers.
Ability to perform physically demanding manual labor tasks.
Skill in maintaining effective relationships with colleagues and team members.
Schedule & Pay
Monday through Friday. 6:45 am. - 2:45 pm.
This position starts around April/May of 2026 and works for approximately 12 weeks.
$18 - 20 per hour
Work Setting
Position is based out of the Grounds Management Office inside of Blackwell Forest Preserve and requires frequent travel to Forest Preserve sites across the district.
Safety Toe Boots are required and reimbursable. Packed lunch and water are required.
