Go Sustainable Energy (Go) is seeking a curious engineer or utility specialist with experience and interest in the electric grid, how it is changing, and the intersection of technology, policy, regulations, market rules, and culture. This person should be seriously motivated to meet the moment and be in the trenches informing regulatory, policy, and market designs in the best interests of customers and competitive markets. Preferred candidates need to be comfortable communicating in formal, high-pressure settings like policy and regulatory hearings to informal settings like professional networking events, to the full spectrum of stakeholders, from highly informed exports to the willfully opposed. This position will primarily support regulatory and policy technical advising through our subsidiary Runnerstone but will also support our Distributed Energy Resource team and utility client work. We are passionate about learning how complex technical systems work so that we can offer accurate, unbiased information to our clients. We are seeking an engineer or STEM field professional to join our team to work in-office from our Columbus office. If you enjoy electricity systems, you are curious, you thrive when working with others, and you are passionate about applying technical solutions to social and political challenges, we think you could be a good fit for our team! You do not need to have all the answers, but you should want to deepen your knowledge and expertise of electricity systems and how people make decisions regarding electricity. Our team continuously invests in learning; growing the knowledge and skills required to achieve practical energy solutions and progress for society, and we offer compelling career development opportunities to do it. The goal of our work is to investigate, measure, and to support our clients’ energy and sustainability initiatives. To be successful, we must invest in our client relationships, and navigate the technical, economic, and cultural influences that create barriers and opportunities with a changing energy system. Go serves leading political and regulatory stakeholders, businesses, cities, manufacturers, healthcare systems, and utilities. We consult on electric regulations, energy policy, wholesale electricity markets as well as energy efficiency, renewable energy and energy storage, and energy management. Does this sound like something you would like to be a part of? Complete an application. What you offer: The multi-disciplinary strength of understanding complicated technical topics with the ability and interest to communicate takeaways and key points to non-experts Interest and ability to get to the real root of system energy issues Ability to manage yourself in inherently stressful and combative contexts, without adding to the stress You can fully inform and frame up choices for decision makers, while allowing that person to make the ultimate decision Comfort and interest with the electric grid, electricity markets, and emerging technologies and issues such as solar photovoltaic, wind turbines, battery energy storage systems, microgrids, electric vehicles, peak load management strategies, and data center electricity use. Enjoy researching new, difficult technical and regulatory topics Enjoy technical writing Enjoy communicating with non-experts Ability to conduct technical and economic cost-benefit analysis of regulatory and policy designs Can work as a team and follow a lead, but contribute ideas and choices Self-management and initiative Comfort with a non-partisan approach, and critiquing any perceived liberal, conservative, or non-partisan policy based on logic and data Comfort with unknowns, and with experiencing failure as much as success. Ability and desire to confront the new and undefined challenges that are required by the energy transition. What’s preferred: Knowledge of and experience with the US electric grid design, rules, and practices Specialized knowledge of some aspect of the electric system Familiarity with wholesale electricity markets Understanding of retail electric billing practices Familiarity with customer adoption of emerging technologies Experience with analyzing large amounts of data. Comfortable collaborating with non-engineering energy professionals, academics, legal counsel, and policy experts on joint work products. Education: Bachelors’ degree required, engineering or STEM field Policy majors will be considered with relevant STEM coursework or job experience Graduate degree is a plus Professional engineer licensure is a plus What you’ll do: Directly assist our Runnerstone team with energy policy, regulation, and market design reviews Follow, investigate, and report on PJM Interconnection committee meetings and rule adoptions Review and analyze utility filings at utility commissions Prepare written testimony for relevant cases at utility commissions Deliver oral testimony at utility commission hearings Review and analyze energy policy proposals Perform techno-economic feasibility studies Prepare energy policy and regulatory memorandums for clients, policymakers, and the public Reviews policies with an eye on the best interests of energy using customers and for market-based policies Communicates findings to a wide range of audiences and stakeholders How You'll Work: At Go, we provide an environment of continuous learning and opportunities to delve into projects that will advance both your and our understanding of a particular topic. We expect our staff to develop expertise over time and contribute meaningfully to projects with their coworkers and our clients. All our work is important and valued by our clients. What you can expect: You'll learn - We’ll show you our methods with regulatory case and legislative proposal reviews, impact analysis, and technical writing. We want you to learn the process and demonstrate that you can execute on the work. You’ll work together - Decisions, successes, and failures are shared by teams. We’ll ask you to be inquisitive and open minded. You’ll get a lot of peer review. You will be supported by an existing team of engineers conducting the work. You’ll earn trust – Over time the processes will click, and you’ll have options to lead initiatives and teach other staff how to do the work. You’ll discover - You’ll have moments of discovery, insights that you are part of what makes a difference to a client’s decision. It is the glue that keeps us and our clients together because it’s the moment we did something together that we couldn’t do alone. These are the best days of work, the days we remember and tell stories about. You’ll lead – You’ll seek continuous improvement from what you can do together with others. What we offer: Go Sustainable Energy (Go) has a passion for understanding society’s use of energy. We believe sustainable energy and technically and economically practical designs are necessary investments for the world’s future and can be more effective through smart engineering. We promote this vision by investigating how energy systems work, and then providing accurate and unbiased information to our clients to help them make informed decisions on energy. Go was started with the goal of designing a place of work where we wanted to work. That doesn’t mean creating a fantasy, and we haven’t achieved all our aims. It does mean that every day we come in and together share the responsibility to balance all that we value, both in our work and in our personal lives. We want to be valued by our clients, to contribute effective solutions to meaningful problems, to achieve a sense of place with our coworkers, to support our individual development, to learn and be challenged, to care about our work but not be crushed by stress, and to have a high bar for everything we do. We believe all work and no play can make for bored, disengaged engineers. That’s why we have Share Days, walking meetings, daily fun breaks, and occasional fun outings. Go offers a comprehensive benefits package that includes medical, dental, vision, short term disability, long term disability, life insurance, paid time off, paid parental leave, 401(k), and 401(k) match. At Go, we understand that to be a place where people like to work, not only do you need fun and creative programs and benefits, but you also need to consistently better yourself. To that end, Go implemented a State of Ohio Affirmative Action program in February 2020. The implementation of this program allowed us to begin to have conversations surrounding our efforts in diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). More recently, we created our DEI working group. This group, made up of a mix of partners, engineers, and support staff, will help to shape Go’s policies and efforts regarding DEI in the near term and long term. Moreover, we are open to new ideas, so each team member has the opportunity to make Go a better place to work. If you’d like to join our team of experts, please complete an application.
