Overview
Engineering position located at Newport News, Virginia
in the Engineering Liaison Office in the Structural group. This position will require occasional shipboard investigation/evaluation on units and modules under various stages of construction.
Candidate will be responsible for adjudicating construction and vendor issues for a wide variety of deviations, primarily structural in nature. The position also requires the adjudication of mechanical/material/welding issues as needed. Candidate must develop timely engineering resolutions in consideration of an aggressive construction schedule and manage multiple tasks concurrently. Candidate will occasionally be required to develop calculations to support construction resolutions; however, this position is not analysis focused.
Engineers will have the opportunity to develop a knowledge base in a wide variety of submarine systems, components, and structures in a fast‑paced environment. The majority of work will be centered on troubleshooting mistakes during construction, fixing design deficiencies, and evaluating material discrepancies.
The following areas are commonly addressed: Decks, foundations and supports, frame structures, hull structures, tanks, control surfaces, and welding related issues.
The chosen engineer will interface with NNS Trades, construction foremen, program office, management, and Navy Supervisor of Shipbuilding personnel. Interacting and collaborating with design counterparts and working with EB engineering, materials, planning, welding, NDT, shock, and analysis departments will also be required. Time flexibility is required as workload can require occasional extended hours and weekend support.
Qualifications Required:
Bachelor of Science degree or higher in Aerospace Engineering, Civil Engineering, Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Naval Architecture, or Structural Engineering
0-5 years of professional engineering experience
The position is required on-site at Newport News Shipbuilding in Newport News, Virginia
Preferred:
Prior construction, deck‑plate, or manufacturing engineering experience
2-5 years of related engineering experience
Knowledge of welding and NDT requirements
Skills
Strong written and verbal communication skills are required
Effective troubleshooting abilities
Proficient in technical writing
Ability to learn and adapt to tasks that are outside of one’s knowledge base
